Trying to clean a switch without desoldering
« on: Fri, 31 October 2014, 16:07:22 »
So I have a keyboard from WASD with Cherry MX Blue switches that my coworker has been using. I just found out today that he spilled coffee on it (idk how long ago). So the switch under the enter key is hanging (coming up half way until you flick it).

I didn't check any other switch. I will tonight. I will also do a full clean up of the caps and relube the stabilizers as well. I've just never had to clean the inside of a switch before. It seems like he turned the keyboard upside down to get the rest of the coffee out so some of it went up into the key caps and then into the switch itself.

I really don't want to desolder it (I think if it's plate mounted). I am willing to disassemble it if it's PCB mounted but idk how to tell.

I've read some clean up threads on using warm water in a straw to help dissolve some of the spill. Does that mean when I put the straw on the switch, I'll have to let some of the water drip out onto and into the switch housing? Then afterwards, I spam the key and let it dry overnight? I really don't want to use isopropyl alcohol because then I might have to relube the inside of the switch. I've also read that you can use DeoxIT D5 to do the same thing which I will do if the warm water straw trick doesn't work.

Any suggestions besides not letting my coworker ever touch my keyboards ever again?
