What to do in Budapest
« on: Sat, 08 November 2014, 20:52:04 »
I am off to Budapest, Hungary in a week to speak at another cloud computing conference.

Anyone on here know the city and can suggest things I should check out while I am there?

Onyx is a really good restaurant... but other than that, not too sure.

Walk around, the city is beautiful
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

Yes, Budapest is a really nice city! You can literally just walk around endlessly.
If you can, take their night river cruise. The view is real pretty, esp when the parliament building is lit up.
Try their goulash, (local delicacy). It's their beef stew. It's pretty good ! I went summer this year though so it was really hot, I had gelato almost everyday :p

Ya, this was kind of my plan. I have heard the city is beautiful, so I was just going to go exploring.

Will definitely try the goulash. Its fall there so some nice warm stew after walking for a couple hours will probably hit the spot.

I know what you mean about the gelato. When I was in Florence I did the same thing. I am pretty sure I had it every day.

I spent some months in Budapest a few years ago. I thought this card was a good value when I was there for a lot of tourist stuff. It covers the metro travel, lots of museums and etc. I drank a lot of Arany Ászok, Soproni and Borsodi, various palinkas and Unicum. I ate lots of good food, but I don't remember names of restaurants asides from Marxim which is a pizza place, Kádár Étkezde which is pretty authentic everyday food and Alabárdos which is a more 'upscale' Hungarian cuisine. If you like wine the Royal Cellars are kind of nice, but buying there is expensive... but the tastings are ok price and give you some good ideas of things to look for at everyday stores that locals use. TerrorHaza is an interesting museum, though I think perhaps a little too opinionated. The Memento park is kind of intersting, though its a little annoying to get to. I seem to remember there was a lot of things near Astoria, Opera/Oktogon, Nyugati, Ferenciek metro stations. Metro is great to go across town, but walking is better to see things and stumble on shops, or whatever that may be interesting.

Very cool. Thanks Ivan.
