Stabilizers and thick cherry profile keycaps
« on: Thu, 16 October 2014, 06:29:21 »
So I've run into a bump in my keyboard journey.  While getting ready for the glorious GMK Dolch I bought a WASD v2.  It seemed perfect for me since I could buy it keycapless and it had less intrusive leds than a Filco. I also always read that costar stabilizers are better than cherry stabilizers so this seemed perfect.  I already had a bsp set which rubbed inside of the edges of my filco but I read that GMK didn't do that.  That turned out to be completely false though (I don't understand how undocumented this problem is).  Now my questions are:

1. Do you guys only use cherry stabilizers for thick cherry profile keycaps or do you sand your caps on the inside so it can fit the costar ones?

2. I've tried cherry stabilizers and I find them mushy, so this is a dilemma. However I've seen some threads talking about that you can mod them and make them feel better, even better than costar stabilizers.  So are the cherry ones the way to go with this mod?  Do any keyboards come with this mod already implemented?

3. If I were to buy a cherry stabilizer board I'm looking for a full size, non-backlit one.  Iso is a plus. It seems that a ducky premier is my best bet.  I can't find any reviews for this however, is it good?

Thanks

1. I've heard some people sand the inside a bit - I wouldn't recommend that though as it probably reduces the value of the keycap set.
2. Ducky has clipped Cherry stabilizers on some of their boards, I think the Shine 3 series? You could try one of those. Clipped Cherry stabs feel quite nice :thumb:
3. Ducky usually makes some nice boards. You might have to clip these stabs yourself which requires a bit of soldering.

On my WASDv2, I encountered stabilizer interference with my Leopold thick PBT spacebar.  Easy fix: I installed WASD red o-rings and no more stabilizer interference issues. If you don't want o-rings on all your keys, you could just put them on stabilized keys.

My o-rings didn't change stabilizer grinding. I sanded 2 of my keycaps. It was minor though and I don't plan on re-selling my keycap set ;)

This is another unfortunate drawback to using costar stabs. It is the reason I am a cherry stab proponent now. Clipped and broken in cherry stabs feel quite nice.

I'll definitely be looking into this when I buy my next keyboard.

Guess I was lucky then.  I might try those thick keycaps on my QFR and see if they have interference problems... and I'll try them with and without o-rings.

Use the thin straight wire pieces like they use on iOne boards. No problem with clearance, but they are noisier tend to rattle more.

1. no need to do anything weird to my GMK sets to get it to fit on either cherry or costar stabs

2. clip them, no keyboards have it stock, but it's fairly easy

3. Ducky Premier is pretty good, yeah

They will fit, but they will rub on the inside.  You will feel a friction.  Are you telling me that none of your stabilized keys do that with gmk?  I find that hard to believe since all of my gmk keys DO rub :)

Nothing GMK rubs on my KUL, any of my Filcos, my QFR, or my DS3. DCS rubs the case on the side of my Filco camo, but not my regular MJ2.

So yeah.

I have to attest to this too, I have tried Cherry doubleshot and imsto Cherry replica and they both rub.

Afaik some of the newer Duckys have clipped stabs as mentioned above.

I would love this. Where can I find them?? :) I'm desperately seeking stabilizers and stabilizer wires (straight ones) for my builds right now. 7u, 6.25u, and a few of the short ones (also straight). Does someone sell them?
