Colors of Leopold FC660M PBT dye sub key caps
« on: Wed, 05 November 2014, 17:24:01 »
In most pictures I have seen, the PBT key caps of the non-black Leopold FC660M are either light gray with dye sub legends, or gray or white with printed legends. Is there any other combination? It would interesting to see for example dark PBT caps with dye sub legends in some light color. Are there any color restrictions with dye sublimation?

You can only dyesub darker colors than the keycap base color, so dyesubbing of white on black is not possible. It works just like any other dye.

I think those two options you mentioned are the only options for the FC660, but you can always get aftermarket keycaps. The spacebar can be an issue though as it's a non-standard size.

The space bar in the FC660M is one of the main design issues that prevents this board to get more market. Also the windows and the right shift keys that are not standard sizes.

The colors you referred are the same I have seen, but I have one that came with dark gray PBT keys with pad printed gold legends, I do not think there is any other option.

If you want some alternatives in PBT, the Granite set is a great option. I am typing on an FC660M with a Granite set now, but the space bar is the original that came with the keyboard in dark gray. It is not bad, but it breaks the style of the set.

The space bar is the only "flaw" that I have found in my 660M.

Thanks for the explanation. I'll have to accept the light gray key caps, I guess. (I've seen on Massdrop a white variant I believe is also made of PBT, but I have to check.)

I'll certainly check that set.

The gray on gray with gold legends is the combination I like most. As you own a keyboard with that combination may I ask two questions:
  • Could you point to a web picture that captures the colors  of your keyboard with good fidelity? I have seen many pictures which look awfully different as to the shades of gray of that keyboard.
  • Are the legends reasonably durable?
I am really interested in this keyboard.

EDIT: for instance, qtan published a picture here:http://www.vendio.com/stores/E-sports-Gaming-equipments/item/shop-mechanical-keyboard-by-sw/leopold-fc660m-mechanical-keyb/lid=35722930 that looks quite different to my eye than these ones published by massdrop:
https://www.massdrop.com/buy/leopold-fc660m-mechanical-keyboard-clear-switches?s=leopold fc660m in that the body looks darker in Massdrop's images. I know I'm picky about colors, however designers of keyboards seem to pay much more attention to aesthetics than in the past giving us an opportunity to harmonize our setup.

I see the new sub dye is light grey with black legends. The one with gold legends are the older ones without subdye I think?
