Serious case of IDA
« on: Thu, 06 November 2014, 17:42:29 »
Hi all,

Have been reading a lot of posts here and it has certainly flared up my already serious IDA (Input Device Addiction). Very nice to read  about amazing keyboard projects and personal experiences here. My wife been poking me in my side while awake at 3 AM reading all the forum posts ;)

Working at least 8 hours a day in front of a computer has given me numerous aches in arms, wrists and fingers and therefor the past year I am on the lookout for proper input devices that work for me. I have started to use a Kinesis Advantage and that has started it all. Since then I am looking for better mice, trackballs etc.

My personal setup.

MacBook Pro (Clamshell Mode)
Thunderbolt 27" Display
Kinesis Advantage Pro
Apple Trackpad

As an early adopter of the Logitech Trackman FX Marble (RA17) http://support.logitech.com/en_us/product/cordless-trackman-fx, I was used to this, unfortunately I left this behind when moving to Canada 5 years ago. Only to find out, that was the input device that spared me from RSI for 10-15 years. And worst of all, they don't make those anymore, so on a constant hunt on eBay to get my hands on a not-overprized one (waiting for one I got my hands on for $50 on eBay). In the mean time trying a Logitech RB22 http://support.logitech.com/en_us/product/cordless-trackman-optical, also a BC-21 http://support.logitech.com/en_us/product/trackman-marble, tried a Kensington Expert http://www.kensington.com/us/us/4493/K64325RR/expert-mouse®#.VFwEQr5mnBE, but not my favourite.

In short, I think I am OK with the Kinesis Advantage keyboard (however surely would love to try out an ErgoDox full keyboard), but mice / trackballs are my thing.

A snapshot of my "infestation" below:

Nice equipment you have there!  I've been considering more ergonomic equipment myself, and am considering the soon-to-be-released Matias Ergo Pro as a possible addition to my arsenal.  Welcome!

I will be going to a trackball again soon. Used one years ago and it was sheer bliss. Now I get a little older and a little sorer everyday so want to get one again.

Thanks!

Checked out the pages Matias Ergo Pro, I like the split concept, however, what I really found out what works really well for me is the non-staggered / matrix layout of the keys. It feels more natural.

I am weening into trackball use again, sure is a different thing altogether. Feels so slow at times.. Still my favourite is the trackpad, however it can cramp up non-pointing fingers (ring and pink).

And actually today I finally received the Logitech Trackball I have been using for years, but left in my home country about 5 years ago after emigrating to Canada. Snatched it for cheap from eBay for $50!!!. They actually will go from $200 for used, to up to $800-$900 new!!! Ridiculous.

Where other trackballs I have tried the past few years were not satisfying, this one after just a few hours of use, feels completely natural and revs up my productivity. Must be muscle memory from years of previous usage.

Welcome to Geekhack!

A lot of people seem to like the Ergo Dox (some seem to have an obsession over it lol).

But for each person what works and is the most comfortable is different.  On GH there are a lot of knowledgeable people who can help you to find input bliss.  Have a look at the ergonomics section, if you haven't already.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

If you get one and it's well-built, and you don't like it, it shouldn't be too difficult to sell it and recoup most of your costs.
