ROCCAT Ryos, Ducky Shine 3 or Func Kb460
« on: Mon, 10 November 2014, 12:49:04 »
Hello folks,

I have a 12 year old Cherry rubberdome keyboard and, besides the fact that I can still write these words on it, it is pretty much time to get a new one.

So I asked on Reddit, read every review I could get and watched several hours of Youtube vids and came to the conclusion that I don't know what I want.
There are two things I'm pretty sure of:

1. I want a mechanical keyboard.
2. The switches should be Cherry blue or brown. (I don't mind the click of the blue, I actually like it.)

So I'm from Europe and those are the keyboards that are available in my country without any hassle.
I will use it for Gaming and Typing.

The Roccat is nice because of its macro features. I dont like the size.
The Ducky is nice because of the lighting.
The Func is the cheapest one, but hasn't the lighting and it's backlighting is red which I don't like at all.

Can someone help me to decide? Do you have other keyboards you can recommend?

What exactly are you looking for in a keyboard?

IMHO, the Ducky is the only choice. Both the Func and Roccat have non-standard bottom rows so you won't be able to replace the keycaps. Also, you mentioned other downsides of them both yourself. Ducky boards have standard layout, great quality and nice features. Can't go wrong there.
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.

I'm not a modder so the only reason I would change my keycaps is when they break. And I hope not that this will happen. I'm not the hammering type of guy.

I'm a teacher, and hobby author so I'm typing alot. It should be comfortable and easy on the eyes.
On the other hand I'm a casual gamer and I wouldnt mind having one or two macros for some games...

It should be easy to take around in the house because I would plug it to the Macbook sometimes if I have to write long works... Or type in front of the TV.

Thank you for your replys.

How many macros would you be looking for?

Ducky is great, the 4 keys on the top right aren't necessarily only calc, mail and such. Autohotkey you change those.

Oh thank you.
4- 5, but if I would use them they would be complicated, like Ctrl-Alt-F or something like that.

Still can't decide. It is really hard. That's a lot of money for me.

I started with 100€ but realised that there aren't a lot of options in this price category so I decided to go up to 145€.

$ to € exchange rate is irrelevant, most prices are calculated 1:1 by sellers so 145$ if you are from the US.

Look into Filco, WASD, KUL, Leopold (and maybe Varmilo - who produces some Leopold boards).

What else am I missing?

I'd recommend Filco or WASDkeyboards, but those don't have the Macros you are looking for.  I'd say go with the Roccat, but I say that because I'm a Linux user and very biased on what I recommend.  I'd stay away from Razer.  I'm saying this due recent events.  If you can find a store that will let you try some keyboards out, then I'd go do that and see what you like.

Leopold and KUL Keyboards aren't available in my country at all.
Filco boards are exorbitant expensive in my country. I would have to pay about 170€ with shipping.

I totally fell in love with WASDkeyboards, I have to admit, but I'm curious about the shipping to Europe and the endprice, after taxes and all. I will try to find it out....

Has anyone experiences with shipping to Europe?

That's the problem...
I don't know if I would use macros at all. I just like the idea of having them. On the other hand I could have macros on my mouse and I didnt use the function till now.

What I really like is the idea of per- key- illumination. :)

K70 by Corsair.
FUNC KB-460
Tesoro (many options)

Maybe someone can buy you a keybaord in Canada / US and send it too you?

Hello! first post...

I ordered a WASD v1 a couple of years back from Switzerland, and it was quite expensive, but woth it for me since it was one of the only Swiss layout quality mechanical keyboards available.

The shipping was $50, so total price $222. There was also some custom taxes to pay but I dn't remember how much and it would vary per country anyway.

The only complain I have for the WASD v1 is the "shinyness" of the key caps after some use, but I think they fixed that in v2. And it doesn't have back light which could be nice for home use, but I use it at work anyway so there is always light.

good luck

I thought about the Storm Trigger myself but I don't like the design of it at all and CMs fonts are ugly... I don't get it with those gaming keyboards, who is responsible for their design?
Sometimes I think the have a challenge going on how they can make their kb more ugly... :D

The Func is nice but not available at my place and would cost as much as a Ducky.... so....

Hey thank you for the info...  The actual USD to Eur rate is very good so I might get one from WASD for about 170€ with a second cable added to the package.
I'm still thinking about it. Very hard decision...

hmm, people keep skipping the repeat/acceleration feature on duckies...
I don't game that much personally, but I would think it would be a useful feature for gamers.

I vote for the ducky. I own the shine 3, and couldn't be happier. Previously owned a WASD keyboard, they're too bland for me. Both are solid, when it comes to build quality.

Not having any experience of the other two, I would also recommend the Ducky.

I have three Duckys, and all are still going strong, one of them having heavy daily use for more than a year.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
