Broken Unicomp?!
« on: Mon, 08 December 2014, 12:28:38 »
I've only had my keyboard for two years (although I type a lot and very heavy handedly), and traveled it about 6 or 7 times. The mouse click buttons have a dent worn in them (from constantly using them) (expected from rubbing a piece of soft plastic so often).

However... I have two keys that are repeatedly giving me problems -- I have pried out the key with a screwdriver and then used a bobby pin to poke the hammer. The tilde key and the spacebar only work intermittently, and they are  double tapping  quite often. (with the four words typed below, they doubled tapped twice...) The same goes for the tilde key. Furthermore, on cold days the keys don't work until the room is warmer.

Is something wrong?

It sounds like an issue with the membrane. Now if it fixable if you want to do the bolt mod. If you don't, Unicomp is pretty good about repairs. Check with them and see what they'll do. Hopefully they'll treat it like a warrantied repair (I don't know how long their warranties are), and if not I think they can fix it for about $30

This might not be all that helpful of a comment, but you should contact Unicomp. If this is a problem you're having chances are they've seen it before. See what they have to say.

I have an Alps keyboard that suffers similar symptoms as yours (sometimes the key won't work, other times it comes in twice).

For me, I know the problem is that the switch has some grease on it -- it was my first time lubing a switch.

I'm guessing that the contact underneath the rocker maybe has some dirt on it or something. I've never opened up one so I don't know what's involved but it should be mendable one way or another.

Sounds like you're getting some good mileage on the thing though... how do you like it?

Hmmm. Rough treatment.
Do you have a 5.5mm hex driver to open the case?
If so, inspect the back side of the metal plate whether some (many) of the plastic "blobs" have fallen off. If so, a bolt mod might help.
