I recently found this forum (as I was looking for reviews on mechanical keyboards. ) I remember when I was a wee lad in H.S. (circa early 80's) I would be in the computer lab. I believe the pc's at the time were IBM XT's and those AWESOME keyboards.
I knew i wanted a mechanical keyboard , no flashing lights and NOT gaudy looking (as I'm not a gamer. I mean I am..but with pen and paper and D20's!)  So i narrowed it down to a refurbished IBM Model M but alas they aren't usb. So....I ended up getting a MINT condition Unicomp pc122 via craigslist (and the price was decent too.)

I hope to learn more about keyboard history and minor customizing as well.

manila? I wonder where infiniti lives and if it's nearby. He's got a lot of cool keyboards.

Firstly, buckling springs rule! I have a unicomp PC122 and I still use it for some things. Really a behemoth though.

Secondly: I play tabletop as well, sometimes with my friends. Excellent! Not all PC gamers are into fancy blinkenlights though. I used to game on a KB with no LEDs whatsoever and the case I had made from cardboard.

Thirdly: there's a lot of good info about keyboards and history. If you have any questions just ask!

Welcome to geekhack!

Actually, near NYC.

I'm into D&D (all versions) , Pathfinder aka d&d 3.75 ,gamma world, etc.

The only pc game I play now is Subspace. I used to be into Doom / Unreal Tournament, etc.

I've been summoned! :))

That's odd...in google maps, 40° 51' 24" N / 74° 7' 44" W brings up Manila but 40° 51' 24" N 74° 7' 44" W without the / it show NY.

Anyway, welcome to Geek Hack! :thumb:

You've come to the right place to learn about keyboards and mods!

Welcome to Geekhack!

You can USBify a Model M - I have one of orihalcon's SDL to USB cables - works perfectly!  And an ID Innovations PS/2 to USB adaptor for my other Model M.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
