Will never find the right keyboard..
« on: Mon, 29 December 2014, 09:22:37 »
So today I came here to type my story in sort of a rant form. I have owned owned 5 keyboards before and gone through Reds, Blues and Brown switches. Some of which I owned are the Ducky Shine 3 TKL Red Switch, Filco Majestouch 2 Blue and Red switch, Poker 2 Brown switch. The shine 3 I sold because I was not really fond of the backlighting, the Filco I sold the blue one because I didn't liek blues and the Red switch had problems with the stabilizers and I got it refunded. Sold my Poker II because I already had a Brown switch keyboard which is the Ducky Premier I'm using right now.
I have since now think that the Browns and the Reds are my favorite switch and I have not came to like the clicky blues that much and the sounds just annoy me. Now I am using my Ducky premier with PBT dyesub keycaps brown switches  to type this thread. I am pretty happy with this board itself and I have no major complaints. But there is just this weird feeling that I need to have more keyboards, maybe its just me hanging out on GH too much.
So now I am looking at a Cherry MX Red board. I already have a full sized Cherry MX brown board for serious work and for typing. Now I need a keyboard that is linear and smooth. I also wouldn't need good keycaps out of the box as I have 2 sets of PBT keycaps just lying around which are waiting to be used. I also wouldn't mind backlighting but it isn't a must. I do not have any prefered form factor for my keyboard as long as it looks nice on my desk.  I have looked into the Cherry MX Red boards and I don't think I'm having a good time with Costar stabilizers as they have issues fitting with my thick PBT keycaps even after sanding the keycaps down and also I just can't stand hearing the sound of the wire every time I press down on my switch.
So that narrows down to a few choices, the KUL ES-87, Ducky Shine 3, Poker II or another Ducky Premier, all with red switches. I have also considered getting a Novatouch as topre seems like what I need, linear with fast response. I have tried a realforce and a novatouch in retail stores before and I think I like it pretty much, especially the purple ones of the novatouch, and I also have one 2 sets of PBT keycaps lying around so yea I think its a pretty good choice. I do not really have a budget but still I would like to get the best bang out of my buck so I'm not sure whether the Novatouch is worth my money. And I think the maximum I can spend is around the price of the novatouch, which rules out the Realforce and the HHKB.
Sooo any input guys?

Well, get the right keyboard then!  It sounds to me like you already made up your mind.  Maybe it's time for a buckling spring?
I have to agree with the others.  Your post was very difficult to read.

Buckling spring master race!  But it appears OP is looking for something linear and smooth.  Maybe a vintage green alps board?  I don't know much about linear, as I like my switches loud and obnoxious.

PS of all smaller boards that are not buckling spring, the poker 2 seems like the most sensible layout IMO.

You don't like blues.  Is it that you don't like clicky tactile switches or is it just that blues are too high pitched and suffer from hysteresis?

If you want to explore more clicky switches, ALPS and Buckling Spring.

If you're set on linear, try the KUL.  I don't have one but have only heard good things about it.

If you're willing to try heavier linears...get some custom springs from Sprit.  Or lubed ghost blacks ;) the best hover switch.

I would love to try a buckling spring but again in my country its so hard to get one. But TL;DR I'm looking for a new linear keyboard. Also I didn't like the blues because they were too high pitches, not because of the tactility itself.

TL;DR...

Just get a KMAC and build it up with reds. :)

Or, swap the springs in reds/blacks for 65g Korean springs for the perfect linear switches. (Lubed, of course)

Well.. If I had that much money I would have already bought a HHKB already. Besides I don't think they ship to my country too.

You did say you didn't really have a budget, though. I was just kidding about the TL;DR. I read everything.

I own two HHKBs, and I love using them. But when I started using my KMAC as my daily driver, everything else just sits on the shelf.

You can get a KMAC from KBDMOD.com, but you may have to find a Korean proxy.

I agree... if you want board that is 'the one' building it is the best way. My GH60 has not left my desk since I have had it since it made just how I like. Making a custom doesn't have to necessarily cost a month salary, there are some cheaper options than some of the top tier Korean ones.
