I've not fully disassembled my example of this keyboard, but if you pop off the key-caps, there is a separate white-coloured plastic piece underneath. I don't think there is anything fancy like there is with the peerless switches though.
Mine has a dodgy space-bar which pops off if you hit it off-center. I'll give it it's due though - it's 12 years old and still feels okay to type on - no stiffness at all and the lettering has held up well in spite of extreme shinyness of the keys. The lettering is rough as with the beige Dell AT101W - lasered? We can talk about the merits of mechanical switches all day, but it seems that rubber domes aren't all that bad. Most people are happy with them, and they can be long-lasting. I'm still a fan of the Cherry Cymotion Expert, but for now I'm getting on well with the G80-3000 with MX blue.
