V60 Mini... Thoughts?
« on: Sat, 17 January 2015, 10:08:25 »
Hi,

I'm looking at buying a new V60 Mini with Clears and backlighting ($110 shipped) from Massdrop and I'd like to know if there are any other good alternatives with Clear switches or the like.  Doesn't have to be a 60%, doesn't have to be backlit, but I know I don't want Reds or Blacks, Blues are too loud and not what I'd really want for gaming, and Browns just feel like they need a little more resistance.  Is the Clear my birth switch?  I'm not sure yet, but it seems like my best bet.  Also, if you suggest an alternative, try not to find one that's $300 or something, I'm looking more on the "budget" end of the mechanical spectrum.  Thanks!

Take a look at the V60MTS (Matias Quiet-Click) switches here: http://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=987

No LED's but they are more tactile and silent than MX Clears.

I second this. They're very nice.

Whats the quality of the V60 like? Poker tier? or maybe Quickfire rapid? Realforce!?
If you live in AZ you can try my keyboards. I usually keep plenty of different ALPS and MX and buckling springs.

I have a V60 with clears. Tab, Caps lock and L-Shift keys scrape the left side wall of the case because the side wall is curved in very slightly on the left side, but some heat and bending solved the problem. The plastic material of the case is a bit flexible and feels cheap compared to my CM QF TK and Realforce so I replaced it with a Tex case. Key caps are thin ABS too. Overall quality Realforce>CM QF TK>KBP V60.

I really like the 60% form factor in a keyboard. However, Cherry mx switches are my least favorite keyboard switch. When I saw that the KBP V60 was available with Matias switches, I decided to give it a try. I got two V60 boards, one with Matias Click switches and one with Matias Quiet switches. I like both of them, but my favorite is the Matias Click. I use the Matias Quiet when others who would be bothered by a clicky keyboard are within earshot.

I like the V60MTS keyboards much better than my Poker II. This is mainly because I like the Matias switches better than any Cherry switch. However, it is also because I am able to use remapping software to remap the V60 without having any dead keys. I like the HHKB Pro 2, so I have the V60 boards remapped to the HHKB layout, using Karabiner software for the Mac.

The stock keycaps on the V60MTS boards are rather poor quality, but I got blank modifiers from Matias and white alpha keys from a vintage Alps-mount keyboard. Now it looks like this:

If I were you I'd look into getting a Poker II with Clears. I have a V60 and I have a Poker II. If I had to choose between the two it would be the Poker that wins everyday. While the dual backlight on the V60 is nice, white is not one of the options and it is what I prefer. But what really seals the deal is the programable layer on the Poker. That is tough to beat if you ask me.

In my opinion if you (or anyone else reading) is thinking about a Poker 2 please know that the Poker 3 will be out within the next month so; and is supposed to be even more programmable than the current model - which will be huge to folks adopting to the 60% layout for the first time.

If the Poker 3 also had a Matias switch option along with complete programmability, this would make it fairly irresistible for me.

Does MassDrop allow "hypothetical" product options?  For instance setting up voting for a Poker 3 w/ Matias?

I have seen interest checks on Massdrop, but I don't know what is required to start one of them.
