What is the function of JP Filco additional buttons
« on: Mon, 19 January 2015, 08:39:39 »
I just got camo filco tenkeyless. I wanted a camo filco for a long time. There is however a big drawback for me. The layout is very annoying. Small modifier keys, backspace. Aditional keys next to the enter...
In specific there 2 additional keys with some circle sign. One on the left and one on the right of the space bar. There is also a button called "Kana".
Any idea what they do? Also any suggestions on how i can remap them, for example to have a win key on the left?
And any suggestions what would be best i could do to make it more "normal"?

The extra modifiers are for controlling IME in Japanese, to switch between the different writing systems used... If you're using some European or US layout instead, those extra keys do send unique scancode and are reassignable with software like sharpkeys in Windows. Other OS have similar things but I don't know as much about them.

This.

When I had a japanese topre board I just used sharpkeys to reassign them to spacebar (not that it really mattered to me since I alwas hit the middle of the spacebar, just that it's an option)

Two things you can do.

1) post an ad and swap for a US layout keyboard.
2) open keyboard, desolder, and change the layout. The PCB supports US ANSI/ UK ISO with no issues. I have done this on multiple Filcos with no issue. The worst issue I ever had was when an entire line of keys failed to work - and then I realized that I hadn't soldered them in!

The only thing that's a tad more troublesome is buying the plate, since if there is no group buy for a plate at this moment you'll wind up paying a lot for a custom plate. But if you can accept a stock TKL plate that'll be easy and cheap since many people dump their stock plates for switch moddable plates.

Obviously if you're desoldering this board, might as well do a more complete mod - eg lube the stems, change to Ergo clears, do jailhouse mod, whatever.

You might even be able to take advantage of JDCarpe's Filco Fanaticism - offer him the camo casing or something in exchange for a stock casing and he might happily mod the board for you.

As for the JIS plate, don't throw it away - it's resaleable (and I might even buy it off you if no one else wants it).
Most of the modding can be done on your own once you break through the psychological barriers.

Or he can just learn to live with it and remap "extra" keys to something useful ;)

Anything that doesn't involve voiding warranty and solder fumes is not the geekhack way!  :thumb:

Thx.
The case is the reason i wanted it :). So is the case on this JP keyboard the same as the US one ?

yeah the casebodies are identical. Nothing stopping you from opening them up and swapping the guts. I doubt you wouldn't be able to sell on the JIS board in a black or whatever stock plain casebody if you didn't want to keep it.

Nice. I think i will probably go for that. That is going to turn to a damn expensive keyboard tho.

I have a Japanesee keyboard on my mac and if it's the same, the left key should switch ti Hiragana and the right one is English.

Kana switches into katakana mode, in particular. I haven't seen that before but that's my guess which helps Japanese speakers but may prove useless for others. I'm more surprised there's on Hiragana on it but that's just me.
