It's awesome that there's a community of people dedicated to mechanical keyboards!

Unfortunately I do not own one yet. However I'm hoping that I can learn from this website and be the proud owner of my first mechanical keyboard very soon (once I've found one that wont break the bank of course). Any tips would be much appreciated. Oh and I am from the UK.

Peace!

I just thought I'd add a few things. My friends have mech keyboards with cherry MX switches. Now I really like the look of a vintage keyboard like the IBM 1391406 or the Dell AT102w but I've had no luck finding one. I've spent the last week or so trawling ebay, visiting charity shops and phoning computer recycling centers. There have been a couple of IBMs on ebay but they've gone for a lot (or that's what I felt anyway). I don't want to give in and end up getting a modern keyboard.

I would really appreciate a bit of help.
Thanks in advance.

Try checking in the Classifieds here at GH, they pop up every now and then. I picked up the 1391401 I'm typing with right now there, for $40 + shipping.

I couldn't be happier with it (unless it was an SSK, heh), buckling springs feel great to type on. I do love my MX boards too though.

Protect your wallet though, you'll likely find other things on the classifieds you're going to want to buy too.  :))

I started out with just a Shine 3, now I have like six keyboards and too many keycaps..

Welcome to GH!

Hopefully you can find an older board for cheap for your first mech!

Thanks for the advice guys and welcomes too. I've been checking the classifieds, some pretty cool stuff on there. Haven't managed to find an old mech for cheap yet. Any other models I should be keeping an eye out for other than the IBM and Dell?

Welcome to Geekhack!

In the UK finding old keyboards seems to be a bit more difficult than in the US, about as difficult as finding any in Australia!

Are you prepared to import one from the US?

Clicky Keyboards often has a few in stock: http://www.clickykeyboards.com/
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
