Replace RF87U switches with CM novatouch?
« on: Sat, 21 February 2015, 16:21:35 »
I have an RF87U (variable weight) and recently acquired a CM Novatouch.  The Novatouch feels (slightly) cheaper, but I like the fixed weight of the switches - going back to be my RF now, the lighter-weight keys feel super mushy.  IMHO, the RF "feels" more solid though, and I want to know if any brave soul out there has swapped the switches from a CM novatouch into an RF board - is it possible?  Is there anything special that I should know or be careful about before cracking them open?

I guess more importantly...has anyone else done this and then regretted it?

Edit - Disclaimer: I have not swapped the sliders before, but I have opened up and modified an 87U and Novatouch recently.

Should be doable, except for the lower left control on the RF because it uses a weird design to accommodate that LED. One part that's risky is removing the sliders from the RF, because they each have a tiny tab that keeps the sliders in their housing. You can very carefully use a flat screwdriver on the tab to remove the sliders without breaking the tabs, or just use enough thumb force to remove the sliders but breaking the tabs in the process. I don't think breaking the tabs has any adverse affect on the keyboard's function so it should be okay if you want to save effort and don't mind it.

If you do go through the process of changing the tabs, I recommend doing a flattened landing pad silencing mod on the Topre/Novatouch sliders. It makes typing on the keyboards a lot quieter and more pleasant, imo.
