Video editing software recommendations

I am looking for some video editing software recommendations. I am not going to be using it for an insane amount of editing, just chopping up dashcam footage really.

Hopefully something free?

If you have a Mac, iMovie obviously, and I think Windows Movie Maker is free for Winusers.

I am watching this thread and would love to find some good solutions myself.

Windows Movie Maker has never worked very well for me. And, bizarrely, although I am a Windows user my beloved Lumix pocket camera shoots .MOV while my wife, the die-hard Apple worshiper, has a Canon that shoots .AVI.

I would like to edit those, as well as other "small" tasks such as cutting out small bits and scenes from other file types.

This seems to be a devilishly tall order that does not have a good solution. Some of the (supposedly) highly-rated ones such as Avidemux (sp?) are totally hit-or-miss for me and often do things like leave out sound.

the elements line is more for the casual user.

much less functionality...but at least you don't need to read a how-to book first

ya, i searched for free stuff like 5 years ago.

wmm was the best and like fohat said....it's not so hot.

some versions were better than others though (they have completely different sub brand names sometimes)

It's $80 which isn't horribly expensive like most of their other products. Some of their apps/suites are $800-$2000.

I've used sony vegas for years, it does a good job

For simple editing I use Sony Vegas, it's relatively cheap and easy to use...
If it's linear editing (just cutting parts out, no rearrangement) even something simple (and free) like VirtualDub will do it.

Do not use adobe products.  Great community forced to use them, but terrible resource monster.  If Vegas can do all the same things, please use it or something else.

Theres a Corel program that has decent reviews I think.

After a mildly painful learning curve, I have found The Gimp to be an excellent replacement for Photoshop Elements, although its desire to stay in its own world of file types will never stop annoying me.

I wish there was something comparable for "moving pictures"

I downloaded the newest version of windows movie maker and seemed to work alright for me.  It let me compress (speed up sections) and add transition effects.  I saw spots where I could add text and stuff, just didn't get into that portion of it.

Isn't it Adobe CS2 still free? It is the whole legit version. Need to signup with an Adobe ID. Free to signup too.
If Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 good enough for you.
