HHKB upstroke dampening. O-ring vs Pads?
« on: Fri, 29 May 2015, 19:32:29 »
Hello friends.

I am looking to find some information about the best way to dampen the upstroke or clack on a HHKB board.

I have researched a little bit and found that there are two methods aside from purchasing a type-s board.

O-rings (dental bands) -- seems like a popular option.  However, would this impact key travel?  I would imagine it would be up to the thickness of the o-ring itself.  Could someone point me in a direction where I can buy the best ones to use for HHKB?

Landing pads (elitekeyboards soft version?) -- Have not seen this one used as often, however I have heard if you iron the sheets paper thin then there is basically no change to the board other than the clack from the upstroke being removed.

If anyone has experience doing both that would be great and I would like to hear your experiences.  I am basically looking for no reduction in key travel, but a reduction in the loud clack that comes from when you release the key.

O2dazone (spelling?) Mod is also an option, I think it gives the best results.

Basically stamping your own type-s type rings.

Dental bands are easiest and can affect travel.

Ironed landing pads are good too just kind of a pain to do, my daily driver has ironed landing pads as well as lubed sliders and stabs.

Are you using the EK landing pads soft version?  Or would there be any reason for me to get the firm one?

I think I might try the landing pads

Whichever the black ones are, I used whatever spicebar recommended.

The soft version is the only version that has been used, IIRC.

If you're not willing to get the Type-S, I would recommend trying to at least obtain some sliders from the Type-S.  All of these mods such as landing pads, dental band, etc. are going to significantly change the feel of the switch, because you're using the regular stem, not the silent switch stem.

Any schematics available for the two types of stem? (Silent and normal)

I haven't found any schematics, just compared the switches I've got visually.  There are some images on the deskthority wiki entry for Topre switch which compare the two.
