Help with Filco Majestouch board FKBN104MC/EB
« on: Tue, 10 March 2015, 19:46:25 »
Hi, everyone. I have a first gen Filco Majestouch board, model FKBN104MC/EB, that I'm looking to get some help with. I originally bought the board in 2011 from Elite Keyboards and used it for a month or 2 before it started exibiting strange behavior. It would be working fine when, all of a sudden, the numlock key would go out and windows would no longer register any key presses. I tried all different kinds of troubleshooting and research on the web but couldn't find anything to help me get it working properly. Frustrated, I packed the board back in its box, shoved it in my closet, bought a Deck Legend, and continued on with life.

About a week ago I was going through some stuff in my closet and I came across the Filco board again. I wondered if, maybe, it would work now because I have a completely different system then I did when I used it the first time (I missed typing on it too, lol). I plugged it in using the PS/2 adapter and when I booted up my PC I was happy to see that it was working beautifully. All of that changed yesterday. I booted up my PC like normal and noticed that all 3 lock lights (num, caps, and scroll) turned on and stayed on. Then, I got to the log in screen and had to use the onscreen keyboard because no key presses were being registered at all. Frustrated I powered down the system, unplugged the board, waited about a minute, then plugged it back in and booted the system...no change. So, I get my Deck keyboard, plug it in, and power on my PC. I then noticed IT having similar symptoms to the Filco...strange. I reboot and no change. At this point I start to get REALLY frustrated because now my Deck board isn't working either, but before I give up I decide to try a cold boot and see what happens. I did this and during the cold boot I decide to see if I can access the system BIOS and I CAN. through a long series of trial and error I figure out that to get the Deck board back to normal I have to go in to my BIOS then exit WITHOUT saving. Weird, but it works.

After doing bit more thinking it occured to me that maybe the PS/2 adapter was to blame. So, again, I plugged in the board (after it had been unplugged overnight). But, this time I used USB...and it worked! For a few hours anyway. At first, I noticed that the num lock led went out but it came right back on. Then a few minutes after that the led whent out again and agin keypresses stopped being registered. But this time my (usb) mouse went with it. I had to hard shutdown to get my mouse to work and so I could plug the Deck back in. When I powered up agin after the usb fail I had to do the BIOS "trick" I mentioned earlier to get my Deck board working again.

Now that you're up to speed, I'm wondering if you guys think this is a cable issue or controller issue. I took the case off and the PCB, solder joints, and caps look fine. But that is just a visual inspection. What do you guys think?

Try a different PC. But maybe be prepared to just burn it on a funeral pyre.

I have a 104-key brown majestouch 2, and a 87-key red majestouch 2, and they too had these kind of weird behaviors when I bought them over 3 years back. I remember having lots of rebooting, switching between ps/2 and usb, and even trying to do an exchange, but I kept facing the same intermittent issues about the keyboard freezing. Even occasionally, I do get a USB driver error on windows startup, and I got to remove and reconnect my keyboard to get it working.

Solution:
My brown fullsize board is most stable when connected through PS/2 one on system, and my red tenkeyless board is most stable when connected through USB on another system. So I just plug it in and leave it that way, and avoid pressing keys before windows startup to prevent freezing of the keyboard. I never found the clean solution till this day, and I've kind of forgotten that this problem existed till I saw this post.

Driver issue maybe? You could try uninstalling it in device manager and reinstalling a new driver for it.

I *think* I've had issues similar to that with my MJ2 in regards to plugging it into a USB 3 vs. 2 port. I've also run into issues with the Legacy USB setting in my bios. I'm not very familiar with how they are all related, however.
