Hi,

Is there an easy way to remove the pegs in the Filco SA keycaps? It's glued in.
Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure anyone has had success since they are glued in.

You might submerge them in hot water, hot enough to soften up the glue but not hot enough to deform the cap. No idea what temperature that might be.

I remember someone (I don't remember who) selling the keyset without the pegs. I wonder how he got it done.

I will try the hot water trick, thanks.

Doubt they are glued in.  Try pliers.

They definitely are glued in. You will lose the inserts probably, but just pull them out using a wire or pliers.

Yes, they are glued in. Yes, you can pull them out with pliers and with a little care the inserts will even survive, at leas mine did.

  • Missed another sale.
OTOH why do you want to remove them?

You can buy sets of Costar stabiliser inserts from a couple of places.

And you do risk damaging the insert and/or keycap, especially if most of it comes out, but a little bit gets stuck in the stem.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

;) I am not trying to reuse the inserts, I am trying to use the keyset on Cherry Stab.

Thanks

They came out very easily for me, I used a metal probe thingy (a scissor blade should also work). You just need to tease a gap and then use the edge of the cap to give some leverage.

The glue used on mine was very soft and rubbery, it came free with very little effort. Any left behind rubbery residue can just be plucked out in one lump.

I just pulled out all the inserts in mod keys. It took me about 20 minutes.

Those inserts are glued in, but it's not some crazy glue. I think the purpose of the glue is just keep the insert tight so that they won't fall out easily. I can actually lift the insert a little bit with my hand, after that, I put a flat tweezers between the gap and gently lose the insert, just like Kirfloof suggestes.

Thanks all for your help. Now I can enjoy this set  more.  ;)
