Please help me choose a new Keyboard
« on: Sat, 18 April 2015, 08:32:02 »
Hey Geeks!

I'm looking for a new Keyboard. Im currently using a Cherry G80-3000 with MX Blacks.

I dont like the MX Blacks anymore and want to buy a Keyboard with MX Browns, i recently typed on a MJ2 with Browns and I really liked it!

So what am I looking for?

- Good Quality
- MX Browns
- simple looking, no strange edges etc.. it has to look like a Keyboard
- Maybe Backlit but not necessary
- 100% Layout, ISO 104 Key, german
- Can spend up to $160

I hope you guys can help me out :)

Thanks!

Why not go with an MJ2 with Browns like the one you tried already?

Top quality, within your budget, suits all your criteria. Or if you want to look at boards with backlighting, try the Ducky Shine models.

This does raise a question, though. Costar or Cherry stabilisers? Filco has Costar, Ducky has Cherry.

I choose Cherry, despite the little tabs which soften the bottom out, simply because they're less hassle when changing caps, less prone to rattle, don't binf on thick keycaps, etc. And the little tabs casn be trimmed off so they don't have a "mushy" bottom out any more.

Costar are fine if you don't change keycaps much, don't want to mod them to get rid of the tabs or don't plan to get thick caps that may bind.
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.

I vote for a Filco.  You should be able to find a decent priced MJ2 108 key within your range, and it is a great board.

Costar is also more forgiving of less than perfectly formed modifiers, especially Shift and space bar.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
