Always wanted a Dremel - anyone know if this is a good one?

Never confuse "on sale" and "for sale". Are you sure you'll use all of those attachments? ;-)

It is a rotary tool with variable speeds. Looks good to me. I make do with a cheapo with a few discrete speed settings. Variable speed is even better. These are great for sanding down nubbins on and drilling holes in Model M barrel plates for bolt mods (really screw mods for me these days).

My local Home Depot had the 4000 set on sale for that price over the Memorial Day weekend. Price is back up to $99 now. I'd say the amazon listing is a good deal assuming the shipping Is reasonable.

I'd suggest getting the Flex Shaft also. Since I got one, I find it almost indispensable.

Unless you specifically need the radius tool or the higher amperage, I would get the 3000 for $58 and prime shipping. I prefer the slightly smaller size and the addition of an of/off switch for the 4000 is a moot point.

I got the largest kit with the flex adapter.

For the dremel virgins out there, get the 4486 chuck!
It literally opens the doors to the entire world of attachments out there, dremel branded or not, even full on smaller gauge drill bits.
Harbor freight has a massive rotary tool bit kit that works perfectly with the above-mentioned chuck.

Is the 4486 compatible with the Flex Shaft?

I used to use a Proxxon chuck on a cheap rotary tool before I got my Dremel 3000, but I had to remove the nose cap on it to make it fit... and it has a different thread than the Dremel.

I've had two dremels over the years.  They were great.

I didn't have much $$ last year and I needed a new one, so I got a Black and Decker.  It's every bit as good as a dremel, uses every one of their attachments, and costs less than half.  Didn't come with many bits and bobs, but I already had a ton from my previous ones.  So you guys might want to consider that and then just get a bit assortment that fits your needs.

Stuff I use frequently:  diamond cutoff, large cutoff wheels, various sanding wheels, round engraver, tungsten cutter, flex shaft, dremel station, circle tool

Crap, don't buy:  quick-lock cutoff wheel, stone grinding wheels, polishing wheels

note on the flex shafts: they're not great for high torque work. i think i've broken two of them this way. they're really meant for precision engraving types of tasks

I have a dremel with the same motor and settings, but a different model.  I have been very happy with my little toy and it gets a ton of use, yet has only taken a small quantity of my blood. 

I don't think I would use a flex shaft if I had it though, I try to limit the motion in use and prefer to keep mine strapped to a drill press-style attachment. 

The All Purpose Rotary Tool bells and whistles kit recommended in addition to the flex bit doesn't seem necessary.  The starter bits that come with the dremel will be enough to get you started, and the majority are duplicates in the bells and whistles pack.  I would recommend going with just the linked deal and saving money to buy bits piecemeal as needed.  For example, the conical grinder wheel seems to last forever for me, but I have gone through cutting wheels like there was no tomorrow, and it is much more economical to purchase cut wheel stacks from walmart.
