Any GeekHackers who are also Head-Fiers?
« on: Sat, 30 May 2015, 01:26:25 »
Just wondering if there are any keyboard enthusiasts who are also in the Hi Fi game.
And if so what setups do you have? (keyboard/Headphone/DAC)

Not really a high fi-er, more like an audio engineer. Most hi-fi gear is useless to make any money. I'm in Genelec & Sennheiser's arms.

i am a member but don't really have the knowledge or time for it these days. My last purchase was the Xiaomi Pistons v2 and was quite happy with them.  :thumb:

I am a member of both communities though I'm more of a lurker. Right now have a pok3r with orange vortex keycaps and a vermilo 87b with tai hao key orange caps. My audio gear is k712 Pro and aurisonics as-2 along with an 02 DAC and amp, sounblaster zx and a audio-gd Nfb 11.32. After I get done moving into my new house and get everything setup, including a game room for my girlfriend and I, I'm probably going to looking into end game equipment for both hobbies.

I have been a lurker for like 3 years over at headfi.

I dont actively post at headfi but whenever im about to make a headphone purchase....which is now.  I usually cant get off the site for weeks until I finally buy something.

I have the upgrade bug right now and cant decide between :

Audeze LCD-2
Hifiman HE-500
Fostex TH600

I have been just reading and reading the threads related to those headphones for about a good full week now.... still cant decide

All 3 of them are radically different so it's really based on your preference and what you want to see hear in your headphones

Of those three, I'd have landed with the th600 after hearing them all, but I prefer the low end energy of that line a lot.  If you want a lot of low end, a neck work out and a more open sound, go lcd-2, if you want something that toes a more neutral tone, go he-500.  Or keep an eye out for used deals and get a couple off that list and compare them yourself.

Could i pick your brain of why you landed with the th600 a bit more?

I really like bass,  im not a basshead but I prefer really clean deep rumbly and punchy bass.  I like my headphones to feel like their alive.  With that said, I also like clarity as well.  I do listen to alot of electronic music but I also listen to alot of vocal and guitar music as well.

Would the TH600 be perfect for me?

I basically want a balanced sound, with an emphasis on accurate tight bass without being siblant.  Piercing high end makes me want to take aspirin.

My previous headphone was a hifiman he400 and while the bass was pretty good from that pair of headphones, everything else about it to me sucked.  The highs were shrill, mids were non-existant to me.  The bass was very good to my ears however.

I want bass, but I dont want it to overshadow the entire sound signature.  I want the mids and highs alive as well.  Is this even possible lol?

I am looking to buy used so I think a used LCD 2 goes for around 650$-700$.  Used HE500 probably around 400$.  Used TH600 probably $500.

I got used to having hifiman he400 on my head so I dont think I really care all that much about comfort.  Initially it bothered me alot, but over time they got comfy for me.

Aside from comfort, does the LCD2 or fostex th600 have better sound quality?   Particularly bass.  I hear people rave about the LCD2 bass all the time.  While some say its not a basshead headphones, it gives an extremely low tight bass.  Fostex I have heard is a little boomy or muddy?

Would love to hear your thoughts.

I'm a member of both forums, but not particularly active, and my gear is decidedly on the low budget end.

I'm perfectly happy with my Creative Aurvana set most of the time.  Rarely listen to my AKG K240 Mk II or Grado SR60 anymore.  And don't use my Fiio E10...its gathering dust.  I do use my modified set of Koss Porta Pro's when I'm traveling and using my tablet.

The only mechanical keyboard I have left is a Ducky 9008 G2 with Cherry Brown switches, though I've used keyboards with Alps switches and buckling spring keyboards in the past.

Shouldn't this be in "other geeky stuff"?

+1 on the th600, I'm a huge bass fan and aside from the jvc ha-sz2000 (I believe that's the name), these have satisfied my bass needs outside of actual desktop speakers.

But like sifo has said, I wish they sealed a bit better. But I don't regret my choice at all, and I have to give thanks to tj for recommending them

Your speakers shouldn't ever be on your desktop. Only way you could pull that off would be with Isoacoustic stands in between.

Ah the he400...
The first time I heard them was at a meet where the owner was raving about how they were the best headphones ever. At the time I had LCD2.1 and HD800. Also at the meet was the HE6, LCD2.2, LCD3 and much more.

I listened to them for maybe 2 minutes and handed them back. The sound is like a roller coaster. Peaks and dips all over the place.

The LCD2 isn't something bass heavy perse

It's just very flat for bass. The highs are quite laid back (I want sweet treble, not laid back).

I'd say the th600 is more fun

Better than the "Keyboards" sub where it was prior to being moved here.
