Any premade Keyboards with notched plates?
« on: Wed, 24 June 2015, 12:09:15 »
I got a Poker II and a KC84 a while back and while they are great I dont necessarily like the switches. Unbeknownst to me when I bought them they are both plate mount and you cant swap stems and springs. Light reading here made that seem fairly easy.

So the question..is there any non custom keyboard that can be bought that easily allows for switching of stems and springs? Maybe something with a noticed plate?

There are no premade keyboards with the top removal notches.  You'd either need to get a PCB-mounted keyboard or pay someone to build the kit/swap in the plate for you.

Again though finding a plate, which I would have also though would be easy at least with a Poker II, proved to be a challenge as well. I'm fact it took my probably 4 months and finally a group buy to find a plate for my Poker that I can swap springs with. I dont even think Ill try with the kecool.

That board appears to allow for switch top removal.

Could always design one with swill's plate design tool and have it cut at a local machine shop. And you don't necessarily need a plate with the notches to do a spring swap. Desolder the switches, put them into a vice or something to hold them, pop the tops off, swap, and solder them back into the board. Not as easy but possible and no waiting.

Some of us have a court order banning us from using objects that might burn the place down. :p

That it does...I just saw it and sort of what brought me to ask the question.

Yeah I not sure about designing one and it would seen the cost may be a bit prohibitive to have a one off plate cut.

Yeah Ive though of the desoldering and resoldering thing and eventually Ill probably try it but something a bit more convenient would be nice. Its probably the only option I have with my keycool though.

Have you looked at the tool? It's very very user friendly.

Im looking at it now and yeah it looks pretty easy. Id have to find a keycool 84 layout but I doubt that would be tough. Its the price to have a plate custom CNCed though. Its just something id have to look into is all.

It should be noted that the KC60 board comes with White LED's pre-installed (not shown on the preview board posted), which kind of makes the notched plate useless. The soldered LED's will lock the top parts of the switch in.
