What's the story with mice? I've only had the $4.99 POS mice in my life so to me they all suck.

Is this another thing like keyboards where people don't know what they're missing? I can see spending 29 bucks for a trackman (damn, I wish I could find a place who would sell me a few for that) but 79 bucks for a so-called mobile gaming mouse?

Is there that much difference in mice?

better sensors are better
the shell is just taste
'better' mice though are usually about a feature set... like more buttons, dpi changing, etc.  the g9's scroll wheel can be set to scroll with or without clicking.  it's great on free-roll mode... so fun.

a better mouse is better, yes
especially if you are on a keyboard forum
with hundreds of dollars' worth in your sig

get an MX518 off ebay or something (id sell you mine if it was still here), a good place to start

EDIT then there's the whole aftermarket feet / premium pad game... which makes much more difference than you might think.  i wouldnt go as far to rip off brand new feet in favor of hyperglides, but i definitely now know what to get when they wear out.  they aren't THAT expensive, so it makes using a "rough mousepad that RUINS YOUR MICE!" more like a very cheap ($15 a year?) preference.

Yes.  At a certain point, though, there seems to be a point where you see diminishing returns.

I have an MS blah, blah, blah 6000 and an older Logitech MX1000 and both are great.  They both have side-to-side scrolling, laser optics and a good solid weight (from batteries as they're both wireless).  As long as I have forward and back and horizontal scrolling action, I am pretty much set.  After that, anything else is pretty much extra other than build quality.

still have never used the horizontal scroll on my g9.  i feel like it might be because of my reluctance to install "mouse drivers".

I don't use it much except for big spreadsheets, and it works by default in Windows.  I end up installing the software anyway (at least for Logitech and MS mice) for a little better control over button mapping and scroll speed/behavior.

I have a brand X mouse I use on my main box and I paid 5 bucks for it. It slides great on my gel pad, it has two buttons with a scroll wheel, but best of all, it has a small button on the left button that sends a double click. Great for old coders. It's heavy and solid. It's a laser also. If I could remember where I got it I would buy 10 more just to have em around. I've been using it daily for a year and a half 12 hours a day and it hasn't messed me up yet.

I have other el cheapo mice that I've smashed on the tile floor along with half my Chicony keyboard stable. I particularly hate the 5 button mice, that is a pure invention from hell.

I don't know what I would want different. Except I think I'll go for the trackmen if I can get them, it sounds like it would be an improvement.

just for the record, are we talking about LASER or optical?  LASER vs normal optical is different and actually debated a bit (or, it was, i think laser has ultimately become accepted)

As long as it works for you, it doesn't matter who makes it or how much it costs.  I like the MS more for work, and it was half as much as I paid for the Logitech.

You know, for my average use, I can't really tell the difference between the two.  I remember when gamers shunned optical, because they didn't feel that it was as good as ball mice.  Then, they shunned lasers because they weren't as good as optical mice.  Whatever.

Install the driver, configure the mouse with a few profiles, then uninstall the driver?

ironcoder: I'd never put up with a mouse that I'd call a POS, even jokingly. For $25 you can get a good mouse now. Maybe a MS Comfort Optical Mouse 3000? Seems to have all most people need, including up to 1000dpi which seems to be the sweet spot for me (and I *like* running at high resolution a lot.)

I think it's a laser because it burns your freakin eyes out when you look at it, then it goes down in power quickly after you pick it up. When you put it down on a flat surface it goes back to full light output. But maybe I'm wrong.

my g9 is unique in that it stores anything that can be customized onboard.  i dont think an uninstalled driver would help with the horizontal scrolling.

and yes, while the ZOMG THIS MOUSE HAS SO MUCH DPI thing has gotten out of hand, i do use pretty high settings myself.

Maybe you can get a good mouse for 25 bucks where you live but I was pricing trackmen over here and the 27 dollar one you can get at compusa in America costs 69 bucks equivalent.

I just lucked out getting this el cheapo one I'm using now, the others came free with systems I bought and they are truly ****e. That's why I need to score 3 more trackmen.

I think I never actually bought a mouse except for the one I just mentioned, the others all came with various systems. All the ones I ever used at work were total crap also.

Oh and I would never spend a dime on anything from Microsoft!

No, keyboards reached their zenith with the Selectric and have been getting constantly worse since.
