It depends. If your kid likes calculators and computers, he should get a TI-Nspire. It can emulate the 84 but has other features in Nspire mode.

Maybe I should play around with Hewlett-Packards. Personally, though, the TI-86 is my favorite out of all the ones I have. It's pretty powerful for a 6-Mhz thing with 128Kb RAM and 256Kb ROM.

I always resented TI calculators.

I had a Casio 9850 in school; the instructors always had TI examples, in spite of them costing twice as much for equal hardware.  (and TI still doesn't offer a semi-color)

I've got a Ti-44 somewhere - I used it all through my schooling then, because it was a financial calculator with amortisation I used it in my first business.
