HHKB with different language layout?
« on: Mon, 07 September 2015, 11:16:40 »
Hello again,

I did try to resist, but I just cant help myself and will very likely order a blank black HHKB the next few days. :p

Therefore I have one question regarding the language layout of the keyboard. I really would like to keep the German layout with Ä, Ö, Ü, and ß at their original position. Does the keyboard have to be remapped within Windows to achieve this? Or will the operating system do the remapping by itself in dependency to the selected language?

I do not mind having to get used to the new position of some special characters, but the main characters should stay at their normal position on a German keyboard, as my typing speed otherwise will suffer.

Did anyone here map a HHKB with a different language and can share their experience?

The HHKB Fn layer is really only navigation and F keys. So if your existing keyboard works with the special characters, I don't see why the HHKB would have a problem. However, there's always AutoHotKey if you want to remap a few keys.

The general keymap is handled by the OS so think of the HHKB as an ANSI board - if there's a German ANSI option it will work fine, but if there's only an ISO option you'll be missing whichever key is next to left shift.  In UK ISO (which I use) I have no \| key but as I don't use Windows it's no big loss unless I'm in the terminal :)

Fellow german here, works like a charm. Alles ganz normal, wenn das Board blank is, dann solltest du keinen Unterschied merken.
