pst File Corrupt Went From ~2Gb to 0Kb
« on: Tue, 15 September 2015, 05:57:42 »
I have outlook 2003.  I opend it this morning and received an error message that the set of folders could not be expanded.  So I closed the .pst file and then tried to reopen it.  I then received an error that outlook did not recognize the file type.  I then went to where the file is located and to my the suprise the file size is now 0Kb.  I last successfully opend it on Thursday last week and it was working fine.  I imagine it was aproaching 2Gb.  Any chance this can be repaired?   Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Welcome to Geekhack!

Not exactly a keyboard question :p so you might not get many technical answers.

Have you got a backup?  Might be a good time to start thinking about a restore.

I don't know how Outlook handles these files (I know they are large proprietary binary files.  I'm guessing if it was so badly corrupted, your only choice might be to restore from backup.

A quick search found these couple of similar problems:

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

What Operating System are you running? If it's Vista or higher, you could try restoring a Previous Version. Right Click the PST > Properties > 'Previous Versions' tab, and select the most recent one you'd like to restore to.

Apply guide for Scanpst, if it isn't working, that denotes your .pst corruption is more complicated and you would see following resources...

http://www.techrepublic.com/forums/questions/can-someone-recommend-non-outlook-pst-viewer/
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/490e03d0-b40b-4141-9771-fb127f8d221a/i-cannot-open-archieved-pst-file-in-outlook-2010-can-someone-help-me?forum=outlook
https://www.repairtoolbox.com/how-to-repair-pst-file.html Outlook Repair Toolbox

After scanpst opens, click Browse and browse to the location of the PST. Or paste the following line in the File name field and click Open. This will open the default PST location in the file browser.
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
This path works in all versions of Windows if Outlook created the pst in the local application data path. If you moved the pst or Outlook 2010 created the pst file in My Documents, you'll need to click Browse.

Select your PST from the list (most people will have just one) click Open, then Start to begin testing the PST

When ScanPST is finished running the tests, a dialog reports the errors found. If you need to repair the PST, always make a backup.
