Good place to buy a keyboard case
« on: Tue, 29 September 2015, 21:46:34 »
Just bought a V60; unfortunately I won't have it for two weeks.  One thing I do not like about the board is the lightweight plastic case.  I'm comparing it to a Poker 3.  I've done some searching around and have seen very little in the area of aftermarket cases.  I saw an aluminum case somewhere, but it was $100.  If I'm gonna spend that much I  may as well just buy another Poker for 120 - $130 dollars.   I'd like to spend $40 to $60 dollars.  Does anybody have any suggestions, or am I just way out in left field?

The going rate for aluminum cases seems to be around $100. Honestly, even with access to a CNC mill, you can't make one for that. Material cost & anodizing alone put you darn close to $100.

Just a little over this price range there is the Vortex cast aluminum case: https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=1002 I have one and I like it.

V60 Matias or MX?

MX the least expensive aftermarket case is probably going to be the Vortex cast case as suggested by Vinny. For Matias though, they don't mount very well to aftermarket cases. There are no holes in the plate - it has to be secured from the bottom. You could probably use something to stick it in, putty or something like that, and one screw does attach. If you are looking for it to be very secure, like to travel you'd probably need something customized.

I was looking on Amazon and Aliexpress and came up with very little.  There were acrylic cases and wooden cases, but nothing special.  What about that taoboa fella?  it seems the cast aluminum one from Mechanicalkeyboards is the best bet.  This is actually the GTR model, with Gateron switches.  It was super cheap- only $80.  Maybe because they are non-cherry switches?  I don't care much for the material, but I want it to feel very heavy.

If you are interested in a wooden case I sell some in my store. Check the link in my signature. In stock stuff ships same day. Just throwing that out there.

Edit: also, both the Zebrawood and the Tigerwood case will be heavier than an aluminum case. I have weighed them against the TEX and Vortex cases.

Thank you inanis.  But I prefer metal.  Aluminum is so inexpensive too, I'm surprised they retail for so much.  But just how it is I suppose.  I have to buy a board that already includes a metal case, because it does not pay to purchase an aftermarket one.

There was a GB a while back for a $60 60% case, so it should be theoretically possible for them to go that low. Probably won't find them that low in a store because of markup though.
