Model F parts for F AT ANSI conversion
« on: Sun, 18 October 2015, 20:15:33 »
Hi all,

I am in the process of preparing for a Model F AT ANSI conversion and at the same time, I would like to add the ALT keys next to the space bar.  As a result, I need to acquire some additional F barrels and flippers.  Does anyone know where I can find those?  I could buy a donor keyboard from ebay or something, but that seems like overkill for just a couple parts.  I am hoping to find a more economical source.  If the classifieds is the right place to post this, then I am still too new to post there...

Thanks!

I will be making brand new Model F barrels, flippers, and springs as part of my Model F F77/F62 keyboards project over in the Interest Checks subforum.  I expect to open up orders in a few weeks.  Injection molded sample barrels and flippers have already been made (the molds were completed in the past week or so).

While you're waiting for parts, you may want to consider going a slightly different route (at least temporarily):

I don't like the numpad block but it is personal preference. I prefer the navigation setup much more.

It's very easy to switch up and experiment with layouts.

That's an interesting option.  Hadn't quite thought of that before.  While I do like the SSK layout, I am using a Model M SSK right now, I think I will keep the numpad.  It's kind of a nice feature of the AT layout, IMO.

For anyone that has done the ALT key mod, did you also add a second barrel for the left edge of the spacebar?  The Model M space bar is designed for a second barrel, for what I can assume is to minimize rotation of the spacebar.  In the couple postings I have seen, no one has made that addition.

That might be the way to go.  Do you know how much you expect to sell small quantities of barrels and flippers?  Have you verified that the electrical characteristics of your flippers match the originals?

I have some other PM offers, so it depends on how quickly I can expect to start this project :)

megahertz - I suggest taking your other offers.  My project won't be delivered until December at the earliest.  I don't have pricing and have not yet received the prototypes for testing - they are still in production but almost finished (the case is the big part that still needs to be made - the inner assembly, PCB, barrels, flippers have already been produced).
