Does anyone play Black & White on Windows 8.1?
« on: Sat, 19 December 2015, 09:37:21 »
My son has Black & White ("1") with Creature Island that he would really like to play on a modern 8.1 machine.

We have tried to install it at least half a dozen times, following various instructions found on the internet including downloading new .dlls, renaming folders without spaces, registry tweaks, updates, etc.

It will sometimes seem to install properly, with or without the expansion pack, but when you try to run it, nothing happens.

Got any ideas?
"However, my view has changed in recent days. Trump’s behavior is so bizarre, so unhinged, and so counter to his short-term interests that the most likely explanation for his actions is that Trump either believes or knows that he is mentioned in the Epstein files in ways that are even more damaging than the blowback he is getting for not releasing the files."

System requirements seem fairly low - have you considered running it in a virtual machine with an older OS installed?
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Indeed very low requirements. I played the crap out of that game on my 2003 build with XP. My first suggestion is virtual machine too. If not, maybe pick up a cheap XP machine?

I remember trying to get that game to work in W7 or Vista and never could.  Hope you can figure out a way to get it going.

isnt your son a teenager? He would have to be like 4 when B&W came out.
Most of the modding can be done on your own once you break through the psychological barriers.
