Need to soak up some info+opins
« on: Thu, 03 December 2015, 19:55:33 »
Greetings, I am happy to have recently joined GH. After reading here for a few days I realized this was a huge reservoir of information, opinion, and experience, and I'd be wanting to post numerous questions.

I went through a mechanical keyboard fixation about ten years ago, but got distracted for awhile. Now for whatever reason I'm back in the quest to find the perfect keyboard. I am currently typing on my new 87-key CODE with Cherry MX Clears. The jury is still out on this one, but so far I like it, yet I'm thinking it's not quite tactile enough. I'd like to test drive the same keyboard with MX Greens, as my CODE is a nicely-done, high quality keyboard. My favorite keyboard I have is a Model M silver label - that has the best feel of any keyboard I have ever used. It feels slightly softer than my later model Ms and my Unicomps. But I digress. Cheers!

Stick to buckling spring and Topre :)

That is all that is needed.

I am currently fascinated with Topre and have been tempted to get a 55cN RealForce 87U. But I need to learn a bit more before I lay out the big $$ for one of those.

Best part of Topre is that it is easy to re-sell. Find a used one on mechmarket and try it. Don't like it then you can sell for what you paid again on mechmarket.

Sounds like a good idea.

Welcome!

I got a silver-label Model M as a gift a couple of years ago, what a joy to use...then it just went downhill from there...I'm using my Model M SSK right now, so lovely...

I love MX Clears but my biggest gripe with the stock clears is they're too heavy for me which loses tactility...I prefer ergo-clears (MX Clears with lighter springs swapped out), or you might want Zealio Switches.

You should definitely try MX Greens, my favorite stock MX switch, and my favorite after vintage ergo-clears.

As for Topre, yes, buy the Realforce 55g. It's relatively easy to resell but you won't want to...trust me...and make sure to give it a few days, I find that it's best to not have an opinion immediately, initially I wasn't terribly impressed when I got mine but it has grown on me more than I would have ever thought.

Welcome to Geekhack!

Does your CODE ping much?  Mine has a sort of musical chime that I hardly notice, but some others have really bad ping.

Btw have you tried a Model F?  Like the Model M but better, so the majority of people who have tried both say.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Honestly I do not detect any ping at all on my CODE. It has a very neutral clacky noise that I am learning to like. I have read that people have pinging with their CODE, but I just don't hear it in mine. My silver label Model M has to be the all-time most pingy kb. It sounds a bit like a sound effect in an old Western movie when bullets are missing you and bouncing off a nearby rock - ping! ping! ping! echoing across the canyon. I haven't tried a Model F, but from how it's described I am sure I would love it. I may try to get one in 2016 if I can find one in very good condition and reasonably priced, but due to my recent kb purchases, I am flat broke now.

The Model M is supposed to ping :D  Those nice little springs buckling and pinging away inside - I miss mine now, but I can't use it during the week 'cause everyone else is trying to sleep.

Yes, that is the biggest downside to the Model M - the noise. I've brought a Model M to work at my last couple of jobs but it only takes a couple of minutes of typing that either I realize I am getting multiple death stares from my coworkers, or I have actually been told, "Whoa man, that is really obnoxiously loud, please switch back to your quiet keyboard."

I do love the 101-key layout of the older Model Ms, so I bought Unicomp's rubber dome version of a 101-key Model M and used that for work for the past three years. That model is slightly more noisy than the stock keyboard, but quiet enough to prevent driving my cohorts crazy.

That's the kind of reaction I got to my SSK at work, so I use a CODE with MX clears now.
