Question about dyeing a keycap ( update : already tried it )
« on: Sat, 26 December 2015, 14:43:44 »
Hi geek hack,
Want to ask about some info for dyeing a pbt keycap. I will dye my incoming white leopold pbt keycap modifier to gray. Want to imitate an olivetti color way. So here my question :
1. Which dye brand / type you guys recommend to dye a pbt keycap? I read at other forum that Rit dye are unusable because they change their formula.
2. My leopold pbt already have blue dyesub legend on them will dyeing it affect the legend color?
3. I heard pbt keycap can warp too, any specific temperature to do this? how if i put the pot in oven for a precise temp?

Here my little dye experiment

keycap for this experiment : Leopold pbt dye sub keycap

+ the dye sub legend was good imo but not thick enough to be cherry corp style replica

the leopold pbt with other keycap that i own at the moment (from left to right ) : leopold pbt, gmk red esc, Sp dcs , vortex double shot , vortex stock poker backlit, Sp SA profile
as seen in the picture above the thickness are about the same with gmk double shot

A shot before the dye experiment

What i used was:
1. Dylon dye 2 of the package 2x 4.5 gr and 5 tsp of salt
2. Tap water measure 800 ml
3. Soap for cleaning keycap before dye
4. Some old pot ( cleaned first)

The experiment:

1. Bring water to boil and add the dye with salt stir until dissolved

2. Lower the heat and kept the temperature at 120 degree fahrenheit

3. Add the keycaps

4. Stir slowly and wait until the dye absorbed  into the caps for me it require me to wait for about 1 hour

5. Wash the keycaps with soap and clean water

6. Let the caps dry throughly before use

Here the result

Before place the caps on my novatouch

Here the final photo

still wonder about some uneven portion in the dye.
Some keycaps have a little portion of lighter color.

For reader please do not attempt without consulting with someone more experienced than me. This is my log for my experiment not a guide .

Thx for reading please give some advice if i do something wrong ...  ;D
