Hey everyone!

Long time lurker. This forum inevitably has come up as a valuable source of info when I've been doing various keyboard searches, so now I'm hoping to get in on the fun :) I picked up a used 1989 model M a few years ago and have been loving it!

Welcome, Ive wanted an IBM board for some time now, but am forcing myself to hold out for a big find from goodwill or a garage sale or something.

Welcome to Geekhack!

I'm using one of my SSKs at the moment - absolutely fantastic for a nearly 22 year old keyboard!

Has yours been bolt-modded?  None of mine have, although some has lost a few rivets.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

It worked well when I got it, so I haven't had occasion yet to open it up to check for repairs/mods. Part of the outer clamshell wiggles a little, but that is only noticeable when I pick up the KB; not when I have it on the desk, typing.

Moistgun, maybe some other folks have had better luck at thrift stores etc, but I've never found a KB worth buying at the stores around here. Maybe if I luck out I'll find one at an estate sale or surplus, but almost 100% of the used keyboards around are cheap rubber domes. I picked up my M for less than $40 on ebay, and I've been very happy with it!

My first two Model Ms were $32 pickup from someone sort of local, but both were missing keycaps (not enough between them to make 1 full set), and both were missing cables.  I made a cable for one, bought an orihalcon cable for the other, and with the assistance of GH managed to find the keycaps I was missing.
