Why is it so hard to find a Bluetooth adapter?
« on: Sun, 06 March 2016, 01:13:58 »
I'm looking to convert a keyboard from USB to Bluetooth, and I'm open to using a commercial product or doing something custom. Ideally I'd like to remove the cord from the keyboard and put the BT stuff inside the case. I'm surprised at how few commercial products there seem to be. I've only found two products.

First, the marketing-dept-was-missing product named Bluetooth Keyboard Adapter:

http://handheldsci.com/kb

That one was sold via Massdrop awhile back. Oddly it supports Android, Windows and iOS devices, but not Macs. It also doesn't work over a USB hub, and that would include those keyboards that have internal USB hubs.

Second, the marketing-dept-doesn't-know-what-exlax-is product Nulaxy, originally launched on IndieGogo:

and now on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Nulaxy-Wired-Keyboard-Bluetooth-Adapter/dp/B00T5YXNL0

The Nulaxy also seems to have problems with USB hubs.

Other than those products, I can't seem to find anything out there. I'm surprised as it doesn't seem like it should be so difficult to make something like this. I've seen other threads here where people have built their own Bluetooth adapters for keyboards. Is there any complete design that is well-documented to make? Are there any other commercial products? Thanks.

The problem is that these are not handy, mostly because of power issues.

  • My personal text wouldn't fit. This will do.

In my opinion I think they're to bulky to actually be used in any reasonanble manner. You still need a cable from the keyboard to the wireless brick. You can mod a keyboard to be wireless without adding bulkyness but it's still a bit of a risk.
So... I can put anything here?

What power issues? Battery life? I guess that just depends on the size of the battery you put in there. I'm hoping to build something inside the keyboard, so I could potentially swap out the battery for a higher capacity one even if I bought something off the shelf.

You are correct in the assumption that a larger battery will be better, but from specification of the first product you linked you can read that with a 1000mAh battery you will get just 10 hours. 1000mAh is already quite big and you are unlikely to find a battery that would allow the device to be powered for an entire work week.
