what kind of keyboard is this?
« on: Wed, 09 December 2009, 22:55:58 »

Can anyone tell me what kind of keyboard this is? And, if you've had any experience with it, is it any good? I like the look. I really want a Unicomp Model M SpaceSaver though...

Looks like a variation of this BTC.

Probably a scissor switch over rubber dome.

Yah, I always liked the layout on mine too.  Rubber dome, no scissor stabiizers.  I'm not a fan of the key feel though.

Except for that redundant 'backslash' key in the bottom row. Any ideas why they felt the need to include that?

I bought one of those before I got into keyboards. You could wear the paint off the keys by just looking at them.

No offense to anyone, but imho that is an butt-ass ass-ugly keyboard. it's just gaudy.

I think the layout is the winning feature.  It's very similar to the ML-4100 which is much better.

Actually, the layout looks 'not bad'. After playing a few FPS games with my G86, I noticed that it's an advantage to have 3 mappable keys next to the spacebar, especially if you're playing a game with crouch/kneel/prone.

I just hate that outside case. It's seriously looks like a 5 year old designed it. The status lights are too low, it's too rounded and has those bulges on the top and bottom. Also, the media buttons should match the keys IF they're a different color. If the case was black, and it had round buttons, that'd be swell. But white, round buttons on a round case with black keys... nah.

Everything I just stated was an objective fact. There's no debating what I just said. Good design will be determined by me and me alone. Anyone that disagrees is wrong. QED.

See.  Knew you'd come around.

Since it is no longer sold I now declare this "A VINTAGE COLLECTIBLE HACKER SPECIAL".  At least that's what it would be if I sold it on Ebay.

dammit, why did i sell my fugly keyboard futures YESTERDAY. Last time I trust my ameritrade broker.

Also I got some inside info: unicomp is throwing up an IPO next month. Keep your ears open. Rumor has it, they're supplying all the keyboards for Hamid Karzai's government AND the ISAF. God help us if bucking springs fall in to the hands of the Taliban :usa2:

Speaking of design, the OPs setup would look great with an Black IBM M4-1.   Lot cheaper than a IBM Space Saver.  If you wait a bit Brian O'Neill seems to put the black ones up on Ebay on a regular basis.

How does IBM put the white letters on black keys? Are they printed or two-shot?

I think they're done the same way Logitech or MS does them. Nowhere near as good as their white keycaps.

I think Logitech and MS do it better than IBM/Lexmark/Unicomp did.  That's why Unicomp doesn't make printed black keys anymore.

Guess they print them on. Dell did a very poor job printing the legends on the keys on their keyboards.

The Dell AT-101W (beige) is laser-etched.  There new ones are just like Logitech or MS.  Logitech and MS now have a decal over the printing to protect it, and it actually works quite well.  Unfortunately, it doesn't look all that great.

I think their black keys were also made of a different material, one or two on my M13 are a bit frayed at the sides.

I just like the tried and true beige Model M. That's one of the few keyboards that just works.
