Mod Testing on an Ergonomic 4000
« on: Sun, 27 March 2016, 01:41:12 »
Though it's a pretty crappy rubber dome, thought I'd share my current work keyboard. Been wanting to try some mods and stuff out, but haven't wanted to risk damaging my QFR and especially not my Kinesis. Found this used Microsoft Ergonomic 4000 at Goodwill for $0.99 and decided to make it my guinea pig.

Since there's no such thing as custom keycaps for this thing, it's rocking some custom stickers made of photopaper I glued on and covered with clear nail polish. I also added palm buttons (both hardwired to left shift).
It was a pretty fun build since A) I've never done any physical mods to a keyboard and B) I haven't seen anyone add palm buttons to a rubber dome board and still maintain all functionality of the original keys.

The palm buttons will probably make it to the Kinesis, the stickers will not :D

My next project is to fix up an extra Kinesis I just picked up on Ebay for a steal since there's a gaping hole in one corner where the original owner tried and failed to install a trackball mouse. :)) Hoping to find a paint surface that'll hold up to constant skin contact, otherwise it'll have one wooden corner.

You could try self-adhesive vinyl. I think leather could be nice for wrist rest also.

After looking around a bit, I think I'm going to make some custom silicone-filled leather wristpads for the contact areas. Great idea!
