sentraq s60-x broken diode (can this be fixed?)
« on: Wed, 30 March 2016, 20:42:57 »
I just got this pcb and kit in the mail from massdrop yesterday. When I was taking the pcb out I noticed a component looked mangled / missing. I opened the bag and found the rest of the little piece.

This is my first keyboard build ever so I'm really not sure what I'm looking at. I've contacted massdrop support, but in the meantime I figured I'd check here to see if anyone can point me in the right direction to fix this. Can I replace that little piece? Or do I even need to? Does it only matter if I am using a certain layout on the pcb? (I can't tell specifically which "key" this is the diode for but it seems to be for some sort of split right shift key which I do not plan to use).

Thanks in advance for any help!

you can try to solder on a new diode.

you can try to solder on a new diode.

I'm game to try that but I don't see part number or anything on the diodes.. any idea what I need to get?

LL4148-GS08 is what I used on my keyboard build but they are cylinders. You'll want something with similar specs that are flat shaped.

Judging by the picture it does indeed look like D58 is the split right shift.

So if I plan to use a standard shift key then will this diode not matter? Or could it's absence still cause an issue?

It COULD still cause an issue but its not likely. Since you got it from MD I'd just let them sort it out.

Ok thanks. I am itching to put this thing together, but better safe than sorry I suppose.

If all else fails
you can try to solder on a new diode.

Soldering on a new diode would be a quick fix if you have the appropriate equipment and parts.
Soldered 60+ flat type smd type diodes on a nerd60 pcb just recently.

In case everything else fails I could send you a handful of diodes for shipping cost only.
(Smd flat typ diodes from winkeyless)

On the other hand massdrop support is really supportive and will most likely fix it.

If they straight up send you a new pcb, it would still be worth fixing this one tho... =)

Thanks. Yeah I still am waiting to hear but if they do just send me a new one and don't want this back I will definitely attempt to fix it (I have an extra case and switches already anyway since I am using zealio's and a different case than came with the kit).

I have some soldering tools so it should be doable. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction on the diodes too. I just checked out the winkeyless site and that looks to be exactly the part I need.

New PCB is on its way.

In the meantime I  picked up some diodes off of Amazon and soldered a new one on where the broken one was.

Not sure if I actually needed the diode or not, but it seems to be working just fine. I am typing on it now actually. Will try to upload some pictures.

Fix looks good, if it's doing anything...

Board looks great in that wooden case either way :)
