Hello from South Carolina!
« on: Sun, 17 April 2016, 07:04:45 »
Hey all,

I've been lurking on /r/mechanicalkeyboards for a few years now and I recently found out about this forum. Needless to say I'm very excited to be here and I have really enjoyed all of the fantastic content I have seen so far! You guys have a really great community here and I'm happy to become a part of it.

A little about me, I'm from South Carolina, USA. I currently own 2 mechanical keyboards.

1) CM Quickfire TK w/ Cherry MX Blues. I've had it for a year or so and I use it mostly for gaming.
2) HHKB Pro 2. I just got it a few weeks ago and the topre switches have been a gamechanger! I carry this one around with me to work, etc.

My latest project: I'm working on a machined wooden enclosure for my HHKB and when I get it finished up I'd love to share it with the forum. Woodworking has been a lifelong passion and its really fun to get to combine it with keyboards.

Again, you guys have a great place here and I'm glad to be here!  :D

Welcome to the forum!

Where in SC are you located?  I am in Charleston, and there is another member from Columbia.

Welcome!

I'm that other guy ghost mentioned is from Columbia :D

Another member who loves woodworking...this is awesome to hear. Really looking forward to seeing your progress on the wooden HHKB case. I bet mrbishop would love to hear from you, another south cackalackian who also likes woodworking and has made a few 60% cases.

You might hear from me in the future about a wooden case ;)

Whoa, a wooden case for hhkbs. You have some serious ambition! I'm not even kidding, that sounds like an extremely difficult endeavor.

Welcome :)

Thanks again everyone for the welcomes!

Yea the deeper I dive into it the more challenging it has proven to be, but I'm feeling confident that I can pull it off (with quite a bit of trial and error, of course), hopefully within the next week or two.

That's great to hear! I've never been to Columbia but I've met a lot of people in Greenville that are from those parts.
I'd be glad to keep you posted on how the HHKB case is going, its exciting to see some people nearby who are also into woodworking.

Welcome to Geekhack!

Someone made an aluminium HHKB case not that long ago.  It looked like a big red brick (the sample was red).

Please don't make yours look like a brick :p

If you can pull this off, you might get a lot of questions about making more of them ...
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Avoid brick-look at all costs - check.
But hey if there is some communal interest I'd be thrilled to make more, its something I love to do! (First I need to focus on making the prototype happen and avoid anything brickish!) :D
