Hello all
« on: Mon, 02 May 2016, 10:29:24 »
This is the first time I’ve ever joined an online community, so this is exciting.
I recently decided that I wanted a one-handed keyboard for typing.  After looking at the different options out there I didn’t see anything I wanted, so I decided that I wanted to make my own.  While I am interested in the end result, I am more interested in the journey.  I feel like this will be a fun experience.
This process has already been fun.  I’ve designed a potential layout using http://www.keyboard-layout-editor.com, and after ordering a kit with sample Cherry switches, I decided I want to go with the Brown switches.
Now comes the hard part.   The reason I joined this community is to research how to make custom plates, solder, and assemble a new keyboard.  It seems like there is a lot of useful information and knowledge in this community.
I look forward to participating in the community as I go forward.

Welcome to Geekhack!

Building a keyboard, especially something a bit niche like a one-handed keyboard, can be a rewarding experience.

If you can do it in a neat and reproducible way, you might even end up with people asking you to make a couple of extra plates etc. so they can build one too.

The making stuff together would be a great place to start reading - there's quite a few threads about keyboard building there already, and definitely the right place to ask about making your own plate.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Welcome! I really like the sound of your project. I'm new here myself so I can't offer much assistance but I look forward to seeing your one handed keyboard make an appearance in the community soon!

Good luck!

Welcome :)

Looking forward to seeing that build, I only type with one hand but I use 60% just with keys mapped to odd places.

Good luck with the build :thumb:
