Problem with AEKII
« on: Sun, 20 December 2009, 23:17:50 »
I have an Extended Keyboard II, and I was noticing that it feels almost like something is grinding inside the switches when typing, and it's something I haven't noticed on a very little-used Mtek AT keyboard I have lying around, which also has the complicated white ALPS switches. So, my question is, what can I do to fix the AEKII, so it has the proper white ALPS feel?

The AEK2 uses white or cream colored ALPS switches which use rubber dampers. This is probably what gives them the different feel. Many people like this and buy the keyboard for the sole purpose of getting the rubber dampers.

To fix this there is not much you can do besides resoldering all the switches or swap their internals, since the way you have it now is most likely the way it was intended to feel.

First time I used an AEK II I could have sworn it was a rubber dome keyboard, then I pulled a keycap off and was like "Oh..."

Then again, back then, I didn't know the difference between the cream and white switches.

I really like the feel of the dampened sliders. they're not clicky but they've got a great tactile bump on the upstroke. Mine did anyway, I think some of them have slightly different ALPS varients- cream, pink, and maybe orange?

I'm beginning to think they had an ALPS employee with a drinking problem that would randomly  throw different colored dyes into the ALPS Slider vat of plastic.

It would be cool if some serial murderer fell into one of the vats, and his blood got mixed in with the plastic, so his spirit embodied all the keystems, and that's why we have pink ALPS which are also demonic and roam around the country confusing people because they can't murder like if the same thing happened with a doll.
