Gon TKL Acrylic Housing & on-PCB LEDs?

Website says the standard acrylic housing is not compatible with on-PCB LEDs.

"This housing is not compatible with On-PCB(Top Side) Backlight LEDs of NerD TKL Ver2.0 PCB."

Anyone know why?  Says if you want the LEDs you have to go with the more expensive Crystal.  Just a clearance issue with one of the layers?  If so, possible to mod, say with a dremel?
