DIY ISO
« on: Fri, 10 June 2016, 07:17:54 »
Hi.

I'm looking for a DIY kit, the only problem is that I'm from Sweden and therefore would like it to be an ISO build.

Is there any TKL or 60% DIY ISO kit out there?
I can be honest and say I'm a little confused when I look at what people are buying. Sometimes it's clear that the baord is supportning ISO but then the plate dosen't mention it all, and so on...

I have not manage to find much information on the topic so any help / links to threads would be greatly appriciated!

Also, if someone could be so nice to spell out exactly what I need that would be of great help to me. I suspect I'm not 100% up to date on this...
Case, plate, board, key caps, controller, switches, and?

Good buying channels. preferably within europe, wouldn't hurt either.

Thanks in advance for any help that I get.

You're seeing correctly - most PCBs support ISO (the only exception I can think of is the KC60) but not all plates do.

If you go for a 60% you could do a PCB mount build (no plate) or buy a plate and a Teensy (or similar) as the controller and handwire the switches (no PCB) or the most expensive option which you were thinking of is to get both a PCB and plate, which allows you to use a "universal" plate which is more common than an ISO one.

When it comes to your shopping list the only thing missing for a working board is stabilisers - they come in PCB mount and plate mount, which you need depends what else you get (most plates also support PCB mount stabilisers)

All depends why you're building a board really - are you looking for a custom layout or do you just want a fully programmable board?

Ohh yeah, the stabilizers got missed! Good you picked that up :)

The two main reason is to have built it my self , since I like the thinkering part, but also to be able to program it to my liking.

I think TKL would be more to my liking than 60%. I guess most of the 65% boards or whatever they are called would work too as long as you don't need special sized keycaps, trying to keep it as simple as possible with those. I already pay heavy for the ISO nordic part...
Mainly missing the dedicated arrows on my Pok3r.

I guess my best way to get these parts is through ebay and / or amazon.uk? Or is it that Chinse page, dropped the name atm...
Would you mind linking a PCB and controller that would work for me? Hopefully can I not do to much wrong with the other parts. ^^

Thanks for the response!  :thumb:

If going the 60% route I'd recommend joining Leandren's next GB (he hasn't announced it yet, but it'll probably happen ;) ), that's how I got most part for my ISO 60%. He's also a nice guy and his GBs are usually fast and good quality (and he's a fellow Nord =P).

(Och det är bara att skicka ett PM om du vill ha hjälp med nånting ;) ).

Hmm... there aren't many options in the DIY TKL dapartment, most people build 60%s - only Winkeyless come to mind.  Gon is another option but he's snowed under with pre-built orders so don't want to add to that.  Or if you're in no rush you could join a group buy, but be sure to read the sticky and know what you're getting involved in.

As you're not in it for the flashy lights or custom layouts another option would be picking up a cheap broken board from your local ebay and removing the PCB, then you could handwire the switches to a Teensy 2.0++  Be sure to get one with plate mount stabilisers.
