low profile key caps
« on: Fri, 12 July 2013, 02:00:24 »
I'm interested in low-profile key caps. (I think they feel better to type on because they wobble less since there's less height to wobble, plus I think they look better)

I know this has been brought up before so I thought I'd add something to the conversation. Here are some pictures I took of the various key caps I have in my possession.

The G20 keys are PBT keys (my first PBT keys I ever had, and it was love at first touch) from here: http://keycapsdirect.com/esports.php

The DCS keys are the ABS (I think?) ones that came with my Kinesis Advantage. I used this chart to determine what row they were.

Height measurements:

G20: 7-8mm
DCS R3: 8-10mm
DCS R1: 12mm
DCS R5: 14-15mm

My Advantage is at work so I don't have it with me to get any of the other keys off of it to measure them. But I can do some more of them for the sake of completeness, if anyone's interested

. I'd love it if anyone else has measurements for other key caps you can find around the webz.

In particular, I was interested in the Cherry MX-Board because of people saying it has unique low-profile key caps. Does anyone know how they compare to these measurements? I was thinking of buying one of them just to harvest the key caps off of it. Also does anyone know what material they are? I thought I read that they're POM somewhere but not sure I trust that. I've never felt a POM key before so I don't know if I'd like it or not.

Thanks for looking.

Well, I found my answer. I ordered this cherry MX-board 2.0 (G80-3800) from egogoto.com in hong kong, and afterwards saw some scam alerts. I did get my keyboard although it was odd, just wrapped in bubble wrap without a box or anything. And on the outside a customs label that said "gift" from some guy's address in Jersey.

But anyway, it did arrive and it's exactly what I ordered. :) I only got it to steal parts out of it -- the key caps and the blue switches to "jailhouse"-ify them.

So I did another measurement picture of the low-profile key cap for posterity.

They do have a *very* slight slope on the top from top to bottom (this is the up arrow, in case there's any confusion).

G80-3800 (POM?) 6.5-7mm

(PS I'm just posting this stuff because I really wanted to know these measurements before I bought these, so I thought others might want to know).

Very cool Advantage compatibility image thanks for sharing that! I've yet to see a LF profile keyset, that would be neat to see imo
