Hi everyone!
« on: Wed, 27 July 2016, 17:17:45 »
Hi all, glad to be here after lurking for a few months! I've known about mech keyboards since about 2010 when I bought a Rosewill RK-9000 with MX Blues. For years I thought this was the epitome of a keyboard switch until recently I discovered the subreddit for mechs, and down the rabbit hole I went. Now, I'm gathering parts for a fully custom 69-key pseudo-split Alps ortholinear board with SA Retro-style caps from a One Per Desk PC, which I found by a stroke of pure luck (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Per_Desk) (Layout here: http://www.keyboard-layout-editor.com/#/gists/af2938a74089d3f0f2f8dce35bb91e0b). In the quest for the ultimate tactile or clicky switch, I bought a sampler pack of a bunch of Alps and Matias/clone switches on eBay, and of course my favorite switch ended up being the rarest, pretty much: Tactile Amber Alps

Anyhow, thanks for reading!

Hehe, I can only imagine the reactions that computer caused when people received a computerized voice instead of a pre-recorded answering machine message. Nice find!

Welcome to Geekhack!

You like Alps switches?  Have you seen the Alps appreciation thread?

If you ask there, someone might have an Alps switch to recommend that is similar to the tactile amber.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Thanks! Yeah, I found that thread and am going through it bit by bit, and actually I've found a pretty interesting solution to my problem: Swapping the spring leaf in Salmon Alps with one from a Matias Click switch nets something really similar to Amber Alps! A little lighter and a little quieter, but the tactile feel is really close. Nice and sharp.

Great! :)

That's the thing with so many Alps switches, and the fact that they are so easy to mod, you can make dozens of effectively new switches out of the parts of existing ones.
