I've been thinking this lately? Why is this exist? Is this to prevent moisture inside?
Is PCB could be destroyed by the dust that get in into it?

That slot is for installation of a Cherry plate mount stabilizer. Costar stabs have the wire on top of the plate, Cherry have the wire below. To install the stab you need the slot in order to slide the wire through.
