Das Keyboard 5Q (wat)
« on: Thu, 30 June 2016, 10:05:03 »
Apparently DK can't fund their own R&D anymore, and have turned to KickStarter:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1229573443/das-keyboard-5q-the-cloud-connected-keyboard

Buzzword Highlights:

Quote
Das Keyboard 5Q is a cloud-connected, open API RGB mechanical keyboard that allows each key to be color-controlled over the Internet. It is built with ground-breaking electronics that provide superior RGB LED brightness and unsurpassed response time.

Particularly interesting I thought were the "new" switches:

Quote
We have been working for more than two years with Omron, a world-class switch manufacturer located in Japan. It is modern, fast and the tactile feel is incredible. We named it the Gamma-Zulu mechanical switch.

Hmmm... looks curiously like a Romer G under the hood:

The force profile looks awful, with the operating point so far away from the tactile:

The overall board itself looks much better than their current offering (with that god awful hump), but so much of this feel just like hype. Thoughts?

The first image makes it look very similar to the Razer Lycosa.

Short version of what I said about this on reddit:

-$229 retail price is enough for a good keyboard and an additional monitor, which will do a much better job of displaying any information than your keyboard.

-Gamma-Zee does look a lot like Romer-G. Would be interesting to see what this says about the kinds of agreements Logitech does or does not have with Omron-- are we going to see lots of random little companies running (rebranded) Romer-G in the future for the sake of better lighting?

-The section on response time makes it sound like they're running RealKey or something very similar. That said, the price looks like they also have a similar premium to Cherry's MX6.0. These days, hardcore speed freaks don't need to pay $200 or more to get into a true non-contact switch, which can get you at least as much speed as RealKey and other advantages besides.

RGB + "cloud-connected". This is the most gimmicky keyboard yet.

To collect your information to sell to advertising companies.  That's pretty much it.

How did Das go from having some of the best no-gimmick no-nonsense all around solid keyboards, to their latest piles of ****. Such a 180 in design philosophy...

Yeah, I was just reading about this. I mean, more competition isn't necessarily a bad thing. I really liked the romer g but didn't care for the keyboards it came in. I wonder what this switch may be like? The RGB lighting is cool and all, but all the stuff about it being associated with work related things wouldn't help me. But, having a romer g-esque switch with more tactility sounds intriguing. Or what if they could somehow implement a click mechanism? I love my gateron blues, but I'm all for more creativity as far as switches go. As it stands right now, cherry and its clones have far too much sway in the market. I'd love to see this trend continue.

To be fair, this thread came first- I just didn't see it for some reason.

Does using the keyboard while on an airplane count as using it "in the cloud"?

Just wanted to to throw in my 2 cents now that the drop has ended and I'm kinda curious if anyone else hopped in on this drop for similar reasons.

Of note - 2 "upgrades" were unlocked during the campaign:

1. Top case is aluminum now (no addtl cost)
2. They're including WASD keycaps with every board they ship (as opposed to none for most backer levels)

The real reasons I grabbed this:

1. Don't hate the idea of playing with individually addressable LEDs with a REST interface. Could be fun (I'm a dev)
2. I'm interested in trying something like the Romer-G switch (they clearly copied it, as noted above). Almost positive I'm going to pop open the switches and bump the springs up from 45g to 55g
3. If it's a gross board, I'll just do a complete video teardown to post and figure out what to do with it later :)

The "retail" of $230 is a bit steep for what they're offering here, but for $150 ($139 w/ $10 shipping) and a 5 month projected production timeline, I don't think it's the worst
