Newbie here ^.^ > POM vs PBT keycaps.
« on: Tue, 23 August 2016, 20:46:11 »
Hello,

I have been using the noppoo choc mini with POM keycaps for the last couple of years and i'm in the market for a new keyboard. I was thinking of just getting another noppoo choc mini but I noticed you can one with PBT keycaps as well! Which keycap is better and which keycap has a nicer feel? I really like my POM keyboard but I might change to PBT if those caps are superior in quality or feel better.

Any help/advice will be greatly appreciated!

Don't buy a second noppo just to try pbt. Grab a set of imsto or enjoypbt and try them out. Even if you don't like them they resell really easily.

thanks for your answer. The reason i'm getting another choc is because my little brother spilled soda onto this one. Tried my best to clean it out but it just isn't the same anymore :/

Are POM caps compeltely different from PBT or are they somehwat the same? I've read that PBT caps soudn somewhat heavier and that the POM make somehwat of a sharper sound, is this true?

the difference in the stock caps for those will be negligible. Grab a new choc with pbt to see if you like the texture, if you do like them I'd definitely grab some high quality THICK pbt. The difference is night and day and feels fantastic.

Feeling:
ABS>PBT>POM
Antifraying:
POM>PBT>ABS
Plasticity
ABS>PBT>POM
Printing:
screen printing process<laser lithography  stencil printing Two color printing dye-sub
as a matter of fact it's determine to you.If you often use your keyboard, like  programmer, playing game. or writer blabla .PBT and POM must be your better choice. Besides, You should take the cost into your consideration. PBT.POM are much more expensive. dye-sub  printing is expenive ,but it can make colorful keycap.Screen priting is much more worse than later, stencil ,two-color and dye-sub. besides screen. other printing are alright. If you really like keyboard . PBT plastic and dye-sub printing  will be your best choice. But for me, The design is important too. Like the layout and color and the feeling.

POM is the smoothest and most durable material out of the bunch. It has the chemical durability of PBT but without the brittleness.

POM keycaps are usually very smooth (like the PLUM caps on choc mini), but a similar texture isn't uncommon even on PBT keycaps, although majority of them is very rough or "dry".

A major downside (for a lot of people) to POM caps is that they're usually accompanied by poor-quality legends, typically a fading white infill like on the choc mini. If you touch type and don't particularly care about looks, it's not a problem, though.

Get the one with PBT.

If it turns out you don't like PBT keycaps, put the POM keycaps from the old keyboard onto the new one.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I've heard that the gateron PBT blanks are pretty decent. you could also try the cheap set from BG to see how you like them, I have them on the way in the mail to try them out on my TKL.
