Hi! And there goes my wallet.
« on: Sat, 13 August 2016, 20:37:42 »
Last month I got the CoolerMaster QuickFire Rapid with brown switches for $80, my first mechanical keyboard. Right after that, NPKC Front Printed PBT Keycaps just dropped on Massdrop for $30. I got the purple set. Two week ago I bought my first novelty keycap from KeyPop, the Lonely Panda for $3. Three days ago I bought 4 more novelty keycaps which totaled up to $18 (Saitama, Orange Gudetama, and Yellow Gudetama from Key Clack plus a LOD translucent keycap from Key Pop). Today Gem Artisan Keycaps dropped on Massdrop and I bought my first artisan keycap for $21. I chose the Amethyst to go with my purple keyset. I haven't included tax or shipping in any of these. There's my little story about how I started and I'm looking forward to the impending empty wallet.

Also, I'm planning to build my first keyboard next summer or whenever I get more money and time. The B.mini has been in my sights for a while. That underglow and 75% layout, gets me every time.

Welcome to Geekhack!

That's a nice range of keycaps you've started your collection with :)

I have a QFR and a QFS (using the QFS with MX greens to type this).  Both were among the cheaper keyboards I've bought, but both are still going strong after a few years - great keyboards!

I also had reason to dig through my keycap collection recently looking for something, and found an inordinate number of keycaps I've purchased from KeyPop :))

Sounds like you need a second keyboard now to store some of those keycaps!
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Thanks! Soon I'll fill up my entire function row with novelties and artisans some day.  :D

I really like the KeyPop novelties! Only problem is that my current keyset has an OEM profile instead of cherry, so things are slightly off but they're still really great keycaps.

Buying a second board is already super tempting but it hasn't even been a month with my QFR. My mind says yes but my wallet says no. :'(

KeyPop keys are actually DCS profile, which is very close to Cherry profile.

But yes, it is irritating when keycaps are different profiles.  I grabbed the Smile! set (12 different colours) which filled up my function row quite nicely.  Still one of the cutest keycaps I have :)
