WASDKB Custom Set?
« on: Thu, 08 September 2016, 21:49:28 »
I'm looking into ordering my next keyboard, and I'm leaning towards a WASDKeyboard Pok3r (with custom caps). I can either order it with caps (customizing them is free), or I can order a "barebones" model for $40 cheaper. I planned on ordering the Pok3r that comes with custom caps (I'm on a budget and don't want to spend more on keycaps than the board itself), but I've never used WASDKB before. Are the WASDKB keycaps good or bad, and would you recommend purchasing a keycap-less model and getting custom keys from elsewhere? Thanks!

I'd get caps elsewhere. The WASD caps aren't that great. A cheap (<$40) set of TaiHao doubleshot ABS are much nicer caps, for one example.

By "customize" I'm guessing you mean being able to choose colors, markings, etc. If that's what you want then WASD keycaps are about your only choice.

Yeah, I wanted to set up a layout and stuff. I could always iDye PBT like I'm going to do with my HHKB. I don't need custom prints, and I would even go with blanks. Is text peeling the only issue, or do the WASD keys wear?

What do you mean by custom keys? Just something not stock?

Take a look on pimpmykeyboard.com. Much better quality than WASD, and you can get packs of blanks, full keysets etc.

This is what I meant:
http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/index.php/products/keycap-set/61-key-cherry-mx-keycap-set.html

Also, the Think Different modifiers are sold out, and even if they weren't, PMK is still pretty expensive

I'm probably going to go with some Tai Hao PBT DoubleShots (torn between Miami and Sunshine), but I'm still waiting for a price ATM.

WASD is about your only choice for ordering caps designed by you. They're awful caps, though. I wouldn't give them to my enemy.

Welcome to the world of keycaps.

I assumed you wanted custom legends as well. If you want just base colors, then yes you can dye as well.
Never tried Tai-Hao, but I heard they're great for the price.

I also found some neat sets on Massdrop. I give up on fully custom keys, at least for now.

So, recently I bought an Ergodox and I was wondering where I can get labeled custom keycaps.
I started to create a keyboard layout and I wanted to order them at WASD, but, as far as I understood, they are poorly made it.
Moreover, I programmed the keyboard in a such way that DSA Granite modifier doesn't apply for that..
Any help? At this point,  I think I'll go with coloured blank keymodifiers.

:( I really wanted the death star and batman logo keycaps..

I have a completely custom set from WASD myself. I would not say they are poorly made. They are quite well made. It's just that they are printed so the legends will wear off pretty quickly with heavy usage. That is the trade-off for 100% customization of the legends. I would say they are well made for what they are - just understand what it is you are signing up for. Yes, they aren't cheap, but completely custom things usually aren't.

http://www.maxkeyboard.com/products/cherry-mx-keycap/custom-color-printed-keycap/
Max keyboard is selling the same custom keycaps as WASD, but they have limited color choice (no beige for example), and some extra keys are not available. (short right shift for 60%)

My custom Max set on an old dirty keyboard shell:

The design is nice, but they are made of 0.5mm thin ABS, they have very shiny and slippery surface, and make terrible sound if you hit them hard.

After 1 month I replaced them with thick PBT caps, which are much more comfortable and less noisy:

Left to right:
- Cherry MX-Board 2.0 stock caps (1.3mm lasered ABS, ultralow profile)
- Gateron blanks (1.4mm PBT, half height, Cherry profile)
- Max caps (0.5mm ABS, custom printed, tall OEM profile)
- vintage BTC 5131C caps (0.5mm lasered ABS, half height, almost Cherry profile)

Now I'm looking for somebody, who can make any ISO layout on thick PBT caps in good quality. (dyesub preferred)
I don't want to put stickers on the blank caps again.

I love PBT. I'll probably pick up a Tai Hao set
