one hand layout?
« on: Wed, 05 October 2016, 20:08:25 »
Hey guys,
I've recently become interested in one hand typing, I was wondering if there are any cool one hand layouts floating about?
I'd be super interested in seeing them!

Thanks!

After a long break, I'm back working on my OneHand Keyboard. I've just finished a PCB which is slightly smaller than my V1 design as it uses 1.5 thumb keys rather than 2.0 which needed other hardware.

The PCB has a built in STM32F072 microcontroller, and has the ability to link to a second over I2C or serial.

I'm going to order 10 of the new design and a batch of the V1 which uses a Teensy 2.0.

I'm going to look into porting some of the standard code to it, as well as work on some new concepts.

Here's a picture of two interconnected V1 units. The new version has smaller 1.5u thumb keys, and uses a rectangular PCB.

The main issue with the old design was that the Teensy required the back to be raised off the table slightly more than I would like.

Using an on-board micro allows the PCB to be lower, although there's still a gap required for the I2C and USB connections to be underneath. I may do another version with top mounted connectors to allow the PCB to lay flat.

I'm also doing a Bluetooth adaptor which should allow a BLE Keyboard connection for both units via a Bluefruit BLE Feather M0 module, and may provide a couple of additional thumb buttons.

Do you also have a full lay out with legends available? I'm very interested in how/where you put all legends. I'm working on a (two handed) 30% keyboard and I kind of figured out how I want the legends placed but maybe you have some other helpful insights or vice versa.

This is where I'm going in terms of design / layout:

149928-0

And this where I'm at at the moment:

30% experiment

I'm looking for a single hand board but that 30% is still really cool!
have you made any prototypes at all?

I type with 1 hand, this is my HHKB layout :)

Not really cool but it's helped me a lot by having enter + backspace on the left.

so you type with your left hand?
I hadn't thought of using a 60%with a modified layout.

If you don't mind, how did you learn tp one hand type? is there any resources on this?

Not yet, I'm thinking of ordering a plate in a few weeks but I expect it will be a while before I have the other stuff to assemble a prototype.

Yeah, like this :)

I just got used to it tho, in elementary school when we typed stories in word no one ever told me I could use arrow keys to navigate so I just used the mouse with right hand instead.
