List of all Alps keycap sets?
« on: Fri, 28 October 2016, 01:38:17 »
So, now that light cycle is a no go, I'm on the hunt for something to look forward to putting on my v60.  Are there any alps enthusiasts out there who happen to know of any available or upcoming sets for alps boards? This is my first and only alps board and I like it, but the stock caps... yikes.

I know that massdrop had a few a while back but I missed out on that.  I'm seeing alpine winter was a set but that buy seems to have had issues.  Anything available or in the pipeline?

The most recent MassDrop Alps keycaps were nothing more than the Tai Hao sets you can get elsewhere (usually). They are thin ABS double-shot keycaps, which are better than thin ABS laser-etched keycaps granted, but really the only sets worth considering, IMO, are their Olivette and Dolch sets, for no other reason than they aren't all black or all white.

The only other Alps set I know of is Alpine Winter, and it is/was DCS. Maybe there have been GMK sets? I wouldn't know as I don't follow GMK group buys.

As far as I can tell, there has never been an Alps-stemmed spherical group buy  (i.e., DSA). LightCycle was to be the first (that I know of), and now that is no more.

Your only other option is to harvest keycaps from vintage Alps boards.

Clueboard has Tai-Hao DS ABS WoB with good prices, and you can get separate TKL and NumPad sets.

Matias has laser-etched white or black ABS as well as blank white or black ABS sets.

MK has Tai-Hao DS ABS Dolch and Olivette sets, and I heard that they will soon have some additional colorways -- not sure if they have legends or will be blanks.

Otherwise, there are DS and dye-sub PBT caps that can be harvested from vintage boards. There have been threads on GH and DT that have information on the types of caps that can be found on various vintage boards, including keyboards from laptop, portable, convertible, and luggable computers.

Also it is a little-known fact that Signature Plastics stock Alps blanks in both DCS and DSA profile in ABS as well as PBT plastic.

Yes, but their blanks inventory lacks too many sizes needed to cover a board.

Thanks for the info.  This is what I had found from looking, but I was hoping I had overlooked a set.  So what was your plan for dolch from SP?  :D

DSA Watermelon is in an IC and jzhen has mentioned the possibility of an Alps variant: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=85186.0

Just got to get people there to show interest.

Cool.  Not my style but it's interesting.
